WRT54G vs D-Link 624 range

I used to have a D-Link 624 which died few days ago and after reading reviews and talking with few people I decided to get the WRT54G (v2.2). However, I found out that the WRT's range is substantially shorter than the 624's even after installing HyperWRT and pushing the transmission power to 100% and as a result one of the computer in my home is left without network connection.

Anyone witnessed similar problem? is it a common issue or something is wrong with my specific router?

    Thanks

I know the WRT54G range was better than the range of my old SMC7004VWBR. Those are the only two routers I've used. I've also only used v2.0 WRT54G's.
