WRT54G wifi routing?

    Hello everybody.

    The problem:

I have a wifi access point in the near building.
But in my building the signal is weak and unstable so
i may use connection on my laptop near window only.

Also i have WRT54G v1.1 nonusable now. I tried to
adjust the wifi connection between access point and this router (because wireless connection between laptop and router is nice anywhere in my building) but as I understood WRT54G cannot see the outer wireless nets and cannot be connected to them (as standart at least).

    The question:
Am I right with my conclusion and maybe this problem (wifi connection possibility between access point and WRT54G) may be solved by installing 3rd party or nonoriginal firmware?

If you may help me I'll be very appreciate to anyone.

if distance and lack of power is an issue then installing a 3rd party firmware like Thibor 15c would help immensely as you cna boost the signal of the wifi.

I dont need to boost a signal.
I wanna use WRT54G in the chain between internet wifi access point and wifi laptop. By other words WRT54G
must be like prolongator/router of wifi signal (it doesn't matter if it will change ip, gateway...).

Cause, as I understand now, WRT54G (with original firmware) cannot connect to the wireless networks.

So, how I can make WRT54G to work with wireless uplink
    (or wireless destination ip)?

Thanks, all my hope is you...
