hi guys. i was searching around and coundent find a clear anser to this questen. so i wanted to know if i can softmode my WRT54G to a WRT54GS whit working speed booster. bob117
No. G and GS use different chipsets ( Broadcom <> Broadcom AirForce ) so SpeedBooster is a hardware enhancement, not a firmware one.
some WRT54G v2.0s are early WRT54GS's with the exact same hardware. speedbooster could be enabled on some of them however acessing the extra 16mb of ram has become hard to do so far. afaik
so even if i had one of the early v2.0 it would be imposible ??? and if not imposible how would i find out if i had a early model ? sins i have actualy a v2.0. thnx for the quick replys bob117
i'll get back to you on this. i dont know if it is public knowledge of how to fid out such things ps. afterburner even if it was possible to do on a WRT54G would need all your other devices to be afterburner compatable to get any increase in speed over wireless connections. it wont make your internet connection any faster just wLAN connections. you'll need linksys "GS" devices for this
IMPORTANT - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE YOU HAVE VERSION 2.0 XH OF THE WRT54G with the IC42S16800-7T chip, THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR DEVICE AND IT WILL COST YOU TIME AND EFFORTS TO RECOVER. Open the www interface of the router. Go to Administration - Diagnostics. Click Run. Type: Quote: cat /proc/meminfo Click Cmd. It will show you have some ~14 MB. Type: Quote: nvram set sdram_init=0x0008 nvram set sdram_ncdl=0x0000 Click Cmd. Then type: Quote: nvram commit Click Cmd. Then type: Quote: reboot Click Cmd. You can do the same via Telnet/SSH if you ise them. After the reboot you get the the 32 Megs of RAM Go to Administration - Diagnostics. Click Run. Type: Quote: cat /proc/meminfo Click Cmd. It will show you have some ~30 MB. It works on WRT54G v2.0 HX with the IC42S16800-7T chip ONLY
to check your version can use afterburner use one of the 3rd party firmwares with telnet/diagnostics. then if "corerev" value from the "wl revinfo" command. is 0x5 or greater the radio device can be upgraded to afterburner. ~ # wl revinfo vendorid: 0x14e4 deviceid: 0x4320 radiorev: 0x22050000 chipnum: 0x4712 chiprev: 0x1 corerev: 0x7 boardid: 0x101 boardvendor: 0x14e4 boardrev: 0x10 driverrev: 0x33c0d00 ucoderev: 0x1180016 bus: 0x0 as you see corerev is greater than 0x5 so it can.
as said before to Morpheus's workaround for the memory enhancement.... IMPORTANT - DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS IF YOU ARE NOT 100% SURE YOU HAVE VERSION 2.0 XH OF THE WRT54G with the IC42S16800-7T chip, THIS WILL DESTROY YOUR DEVICE AND IT WILL COST YOU TIME AND EFFORTS TO RECOVER you have been warned.
What does afterburner gives me? More power? More Speed? Do I need a differnet PCMCIA card to achieve it?
well i had a corerev: 0x7 but still dident work. anyway its now back at wallmart and i have my cash bach so i will buy me tomorow the speedbooster version so all is good. but tnx for the help anyway guys. bob117
yes i know that. i plan to build a media pvr pc whit 2 analog and 2 digital capture cards 4 HDs in raid mode and a dvd drive and dont want to mutch cables in my living room. so i need to buy a new network card too. but im not to happy whit the 54mbit witch i original expected to be 4 mb/sec but it seems whit error correction and security its more like 1,8 mb/sec so im hopeing to get a little more out of the 108 mbit version. maby 4mb/sec after all bob117
The *GS devices of Linksys are NOT 108 MBit/s devices. Ususally in 108 MBit/s WLAN devices 2 channels are being used concurrently to get the doubled wireless speed. In the *GS devices Linksys is using a differnet signal modulation and some trickery in the driver to get more speed. Even Linksys does only promise "New SpeedBooster technology increases wireless network performance by up to 35%" http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=610 In my experience it's more like 15-25%.
The WRT54GX is a 108mbs device, when used with a WPC54GX. Using IPERF to test throughput I am able to transfer at 44.8mbs. The problems is the costs and there is no PCI version available.
ok tnx for pointing that out... sooooo big question ... what router sude i then buy whitch has 108 mbit plus cards and is as modable as the linksys one ?? bob117
AFAIK there is no 108 Mbit/s capable router, that is as modable as the WRT54G routers. But if you have neighbors, that are also using wlans, buying a 108 Mbit router is a bad idea anyway. Usually there can be at most 3 overlapping wlans, without interfering with each other (channel 1, 6, 11). So if you neighbors are also using wlans, buying a 108 Mbit router is calling for trouble.
The WRT54GX conforms to WIFI Org standards and does not use more than one channel. Some other products do and should be avoided. This was confirmed in a WRT54GX tests that was in the news at DSLReports.Com. Belkin uses the same hardware. So you will not be stepping on your neighbors spectrum. As for overlapping channels 1,6, and 11 do not overlap with each other, but do overlap with adjacent channels. So the term non-overlapping ia a misnomer. Boostins your power also interferes with your neighbors, so should be used with discretion. Sveasoft will be and I believe Avenger maybe offering Mod on the WRT54GX.
I´m in deep shit!!!!!! I did it and now my WRT54G is fuck up... I have 2 WRT54G 1 is V2.0 and the other one is V2.2, I performed the memory upgrade in the wrong one by mistaque, and now the power ligth does not stop blinking. Which is the recovey procedure???
I did the same on my v2.2 which have the 32Mb chip, but it gave also the blinking leds. I tryed grounding pin 12 and also setting addresslines (15,16) but it did not work. What worked was building hairydairymaid:s jtag connector to wrt and using linux software to reset nvram a couple of times. Took time, but it was worth it, Now I have good testbox to play with and another one for production use.
software upgraded them mem too 30mb I resentley installed Sveasoft newest non-beta release works good. i was wondering tho now that i upgraded it it dosent show me the version so i can see if i have the newer chip on my WRT54G so i can have speedboost or whatever it is called lol so like is there anyway to tell here is the bbr's info from what morphus said to do Vendor:LINKSYS ModelName:SVEASOFT Firmware Version:Satori-4.0 v2.07.1.7sv , Jun 30 2004 #:001 Boot Version:v3.3 RF Status:enabled RF Firmware Version:Satori-4.0 v2.07.1.7sv RF Domain:Worldwide (channel 1~11) RF Channel:6 RF SSID:Justins WiFi -----Dynamic Information RF Mac Address:00:12:17:09:1D2 LAN Mac Address:00:12:17:09:1D0 WAN Mac Address:00:12:17:09:1D1 Hardware Version:2.0
Re: software upgraded them mem too 30mb NO. please everyone stop using 192.168.1.1/SysInfo.htm as they think this tells you the version number of the Router. this is TOTALLY incorrect. To boost to 32Mb you have to take the router apart and check the memory modules. failure to do this can result in YOU bricking your router. you have only yoursleves to blame. do not do this. please.
Re: I´m in deep shit!!!!!! the only way now is to use the JTAG method which involves adding a Serial port to your router. Ask "wolf" to supply you the details.
Re: I´m in deep shit!!!!!! http://www.theforestnetworking.com/hardware.php is the link to his site. I purchased the JTAG and serial cables as well as the AD233AK. All great products, well built and shipping is excellent.
Re: software upgraded them mem too 30mb Yup, folks should listen to you. I have a version 2.0 of the WRT54G. I opened up the case, and I had a 2.0 XH version! BUT ... looking at the chips mine said 400, not 800. So I definitely have only 16 megs of ram and not 32. I didn't even attempt to do the procedure. I just wanted to share with everyone that only certain 2.0 XH's have the larger chips, mine does not, and Toxic is absolutely right... if you risk doing the upgrade, you better be 100% completely and totally sure you can. If you ruin your router, you have noone to blame but yourself. I got a little excited and anxious when I saw the 2.0 XH on the board, but when I noticed my chips were only 400's ... kinda let down. But it beats the heck outta bricking my router.
