WRT54G Xmit Power on 802.11b

I have tried HyperWRT and DD-WRT on my WRT54G in an attempt to boost Xmit power, so I can better use my 802.11b laptop. Right now, my router is about 30 feet from my laptop, yet I still have low/very low signal and at most, 150/k download speed. I had the same problems on my old Linksys BEF router.

I have moved the Xmit power from 50 to 100 and finally to 251 MW, but I see NO noticeable difference in my reception. The signal is going through one wall, so I don't know why it's having such a hard time. I should still notice the improvement on B clients, right?

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Regards,

    Dave
