I was wondering if I could use a WRT54G router V5 as a repeater for my wireless network.

I know since it's version 5 firmware updates aren't compatible.

I basically want it to be able to repeat the wifi signals, as well as allow me to connect lan cables to it (such as an xbox).

    Is this at all possible?

and if so, how would I do it?

    thanks in advance

to repeat the signal you would need a 3rd party firmware, of which there is none. sorry but the v5.0 is tbh crap for anything other than a bog standard wireless router.

which makes me wonder.....Why thell is LINKSYS going backward like that?

I thought they just had made the smartest move ever by going open source. Can't they see why their WRT54G line is so popular?

My theory is...maybe they purposely want to phase-out WRT54G by introducing the lame v5.

this is just a guess but the company is owned by cisco, and now linksys have a unit that out features half cisco's router at half the price. not a good move by linksys tbh:)

however, there is light at the end of the tunnel so to speak. the WRT54GL when official released will be the same WRT54G asolder WRT versions. the WRT54GS still is able to use linux so tbh there is no loss to the customer, unless he buys a v5 router without visiting this site first.

Alright thanks guys, thats pretty much what I expected

    Second Question

This is what I want to do:
Internet connects to a wireless router

through wi-fi signals an access point repeats the signals, as well as allowing me to connect to the internet through hardwire

is this possible? and any suggestions on hardware?
I was looking at the Linksys WRT54gs, and it says it can act as an access point.

Picture of what I want (excuse any crappiness )

    [Internet-]> [Wireless Router ](sends wifi)

recieve WifiSignal->[ Accesspoint ] -> [Repeats Signal] and
    ................................................-> [Allows hardwire to internet]
