WRT54GC antenna question

I have my WRT54GC on the wall and I noticed that when I mount it at an angle such that its a rhombus on the wall with ports facing bottom left(so to speak) my SnR improved by 6 to 10 dB depending on where exactly I play my laptop (with 2915ABG). Used netstumbler to do the measurements.

How exactly is the antenna laid out? I know it's omni but still.
Also regardless of what anlge it's at, if I open the antenna hatch without connecting an antenna to it, I lose about 20dB...what gives? Is it really using both antennas at the same time?

I just bought WRT54GC with internal antenna and have a option for external Antenna

I look inside the box, I see in side board there 02 internal antenna, one in the vertical, the other in horizotal positions

Please advice in this case how 02 internal antenna work , and when attached external antenna how WRT54GC work ?!

If I have my router at an angle, on the wall, such that it looks like a rhombus (ports on bottom left), I gain 6 dB. It has been in the same area though. I will try to move it elsewhere to get a better idea of the signal, another day.

I was asking about the antenna orientation as I thought that one antenna is the internal one another is the connector for an external one. Are you 100% sure there are two internal ones?
