I have a WRT54GL router that runs my internet into the home computer which manages to pick up the internet fine, and also connects to the wireless without a problem. However as soon as i move no more then 5 or 6 feet from the router the signal is so bad that my laptop can only find it half of the time and is unable to connect to it.

One word for you, unfortunately: warranty. Unless you have set the wireless transmiting power to...1 mW.

before you condemn you WRT54GL to the scrap pile as danix71 quicky assumes, please read/divulge the article i have wrote on Wireless Signal Tweaking

this gives an insight with some possible tweaking is getting better signal strengths.

interference from other Wifi Cells, Cordless Phones and other 2.4Ghz transmitting devices can effect the signal strength, along with badly written Wifi drivers for your laptop. I have noticed some version of Intel Drivers give better performance that others.

there are a number of advance wireless settings that you should possibly try, AND also try a 3rd party firmware, which will give better functionality of the router with extra boost for the wifi signal.
