WRT54GL, doesn't route internet to LAN

    Hey, guys,

Just bought a WRT54GL, but have a bit of a problem. The router can dial the pppoe connection and ping websites, it can also ping my LAN pc's (assigns them IP's, all works fine). The PC's can ping the router, and can ping each other.

The problem is, that the LAN PC's have no internet access.

    I suppose I haven't configured something properly?

Sounds like DNS. Can the machines ping websites by IP? Better yet see if the lan machines can access webpages via IP.

No, they can't, no access to the outside world whatsoever.

Here's a quick update. I managed to get it working by resetting it and only adding the pppoe settings. As soon as I try to change any other setting, the connection gets lost again - as if the router has some firmware problem. I am currently using HyperWRT Thibor 15c, but had similar problems with DD-WRT as well.

Starting to think it's a hardware problem?

hmmmm quite interesting. When it is working what does the route table show (listed under advanced routing) and then when you make a change and it breaks what does is show then?

did you configure the router as gateway for the PC?
If the PC gets all its settings from the router, did you reboot/disconect the PC after your changed the settings on the router?

actually i didnt think about this, but it would explain exactly what you are experiencing.

Ok, the router is dead again and can't seem to get the WAN->LAN going.

Yes, I've been "repairing" the PC's connection after each router reboot, you can imagine how frustrating this is. And the router is configured as a "Gateway", not "Router".

ifican, haven't noticed a table under those settings, will post tomorrow what I see there. And if I somehow manage to get it going, I'll post the table again, so we can compare.

From memory, I remember a strange "MARK 105x10" or something like this appearing in the table, after using the iptable command. I am actually using a line (iptables -t mangle -I PREROUTING -i ppp0 -j TTL --ttl-set 10) to increase my TTL from 1 to 10 (my PPPoE provider wants to limit my connection to 1 PC only, but I need WiFi). TTL settings seemed to work, as when I pinged some domain from the router it showed TTL=10, and from the LAN PC, it was TTL=9. Do you think there's something wrong with the command I use to increase the TTL?

tbh if you have been playing with ip tables etc and it is still not working I would reset to factory defaults. press the reset button for 30 seconds. make sure only ONE pc is connected and reconfigure your pppoe settings. and see if you can access the net

Hi all, don't know ur problem is fix or not, well when i wanted to connect a connection using a PPPOE, i will always do some check list, here might help you.

1st, the ADSL modem, make sure the ADSL modem is on bridge mode and configure the VPI/VCI accourding to the ISP.

2nd, PC ip address, set both IP address and DNS to auto assign by DHCP server

    3. connect PC to the router via cable for configuration and leave the ADSL modem a site.

    4. make sure all the information provided by isp key in to the router (eg. username@isp , password, DNS) save setting and configure the rest ( Wifi SSID, WEP/WAP and so on).

    5. Plug the ADSL modem in, and log in the router check the status page, if it say connected and you get the WAN IP n gateway, you should able to connect to the internet.

    have fun :) ...........
remember friends, try and errors make you learn faster :) cheers~!

Seems the problem was with the DNS servers. If I put the provider's DNS servers, everything works great.
