WRT54GL Upgrade are Failed!

    Hi,

    I have an WRT54GL V1.1 (S/N: CL7B1FA0....).
    Firmware Version: v4.30.5

The Router is working OK, but it is not possible to flash a 3rd party firmware.

I have tried over the WEB - Interface to flash the following firmwares:

    - dd-wrt.v23_2_generic
    - dd-wrt.v23_2_mini_generic
    - dd-wrt.v23_generic
    - dd-wrt.v23_mini_generic
    - openwrt-g-freifunk-1.4.5-de
    - openwrt-WRT54G-squashfs
    - Hyperwrt_G_Thibor15c

But I allways get a "Upgrade are Failed!" back.

Flashing e.g. Firmware Version: v4.30.9 with tftp to the router is possible,
but also from this Firmware Version flashing 3rd party firmware is not working.

Has somebody an idea how it will work?

    thx
    Christoph

Strange. I have the same, but had no problem flashing it to Tomato... Just a couple of quick ideas ( referring to update by web-interface ):
    - Are you by any chance trying to do it by wireless?
    - Did you try unplugging the WAN jack before update?
    - Are you running a firewall on the PC? Did you try disabling it before the update?
    - Are you trying to do it by https? If so, did you try by http?
    - How is your PC set up to connect to the router (IP)? Is it by DHCP? Is your IP by any chance expiring in the middle of the update?
    - After the update is "finished" as your browser tells you, did you try to wait a few minutes before pressing "continue" (or whatever)? The flashing may not actually be done yet by the time it says it is...
    good luck,
    Max

clearing cookies and flashing with dd-wrt-mini from link above was also not successfully
    I have tried with IE7 and FF2.0

    - Are you by any chance trying to do it by wireless?
No and I think is is better only fixed

    - Did you try unplugging the WAN jack before update?
I have/had no WAN jack plugged

    - Are you running a firewall on the PC? Did you try disabling it before the update?
Yes, but I have disabled the firewall and also the AntiVir

    - Are you trying to do it by https? If so, did you try by http?
    Only tried by http.

    - How is your PC set up to connect to the router (IP)? Is it by DHCP? Is your IP by any chance expiring in the middle of the update?
fixed IP (192.168.1.1/24) and not changed

    - After the update is "finished" as your browser tells you, did you try to wait a few minutes before pressing "continue" (or whatever)? The flashing may not actually be done yet by the time it says it is...
Yes, I have tried to wait few minutes but also not with success.

    Some additional information:
    - Router respondes sometimes very slow by accessing over the WEB Interface
    - After upgrade (or better said trying to upgrade) I have to flash original linksys with tftp

It is very strengh for me that this is not working because I have yesterday successfully flashed a WRT54G V5.0 to dd-wrt-micro and I this this is more tricky.

What kind of ethernet adapter do you have, when you have a 10/100/1000 put it on 100mb full duplex, i often flash a WRT54GL, no problems with it.

I always reset the router. Then with a fix IP adres 192.168.1.10 subnet mask 255.255.255.0 no gateway no dns

    Strange indeed.
Just to get it straight: 192.168.1.1 is your router's IP, is it? Your PC is set up having a fixed 192.168.1.x IP, right?
...Hmmmmm... :hmm: Did you slide the write protect tab of your router into the correct position...? </idiot mode off> Do you have other fairly strong RF sources near your router? Another WiFi? A mobile phone? whatever? I managed to reset my cable modem a few times when my router was too close to it... The monitor still shakes when I do a WiFi survey... Still, it's strange that you manage to reflash linksys stock firmware, but nothing else... well, this is really stupid, but... are you resetting the nvram and reconfigure the bare minimum manually before attempting to update?
...I'm running out of ideas... maybe this is simply a faulty (HW) router...
    Cheers,
    Max

May have missed it but I didnt read if you set your router settings back to factory default. I had the same problem with DD-WRT never loading onto my GL. Always received the message "Upgrade are Failed" for months. I reset my Linksys firmware and tried again, SUCCESS.

    Hi,

I have tried to upgrade with fixed 100FDX (on my NIC), but still not working.
Bevor I have allways reset to factory defaults (with GUI and Reset Buttown > 30 sec).
Mobile Phone other WIFI and so on should not the problem, because I have flashed a other router on the same place with the same PC/NIC settings successfully.

    > Did you slide the write protect tab of your router into the correct position...?
Can you please exlpain what you exectly mean?

    Any other ideas?

    thx

    regards,
    Christoph

Oh come on now, really... I clearly meant that as a joke... Anyways, have you tried to flash "Tomato" into the router? I don't see it on your initial list... Otherwise, I'm afraid I'm out of ideas, you'll need someone more experienced than I am to crack this... sorry...
    Cheers,
    Max

I see it's been almost 2 years but just incase you hadn't figured it out I found this as I ran into the same issue:

    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Linksys_WRT54G/GL/GS/GX#WRT54GL

"The stock firmware from Linksys on the WRT54GL v1 and 1.1 won't accept a firmware image over 3MB in size (you will get the error: "Upgrade are failed!"(sic) if you try). So you will need to flash the micro or mini versions of DD-WRT onto the router BEFORE flashing the standard, voip, and vpn versions. Make sure you reset the router to factory defaults in dd-wrt before you upgrade to the standard, voip, and vpn versions. (Mega builds will NOT fit on this router)"
