I recently switched from cable to DSL due to price. I received a Motorola DSL modem at sign-up and it works fine by itself, but when I try to add the WRT54GL to give my other computers in the house internet access, nothing seems to work. It worked fine with cable. Bellsouth (ATT) says it doesn't support the router (only several Netopia models). I've followed the original linksys instructions using the manual and the CD. I also tried suggestions on the linksys website (answer ID 2210), but they didn't help.

Any suggestions? I'd like to avoid buying another router.

I have a WRT54GL Router V1.1 with AT&T Yahoo DSL and it works Perfectly ALL THE TIME... No Issues... I have used it with the Linksys factory firmware... the Thibor 15c firmware... and the Tomato firmware... NO ISSUES... I have also used it at other locations with other DSL Services... No Issues... and I have used it with Cable... No Issues... You can set your modem to be a bridge or you can let your modem find the Internet... Up to YOU... Either way when things are set up properly... that is, the Modem and the Router with DSL or Cable it should work for you perfectly ALL the time as it does for me... I hope this gives you confidence...

Thanks for your support. I'm not sure what you mean by properly, but I am encouraged that users have made the router work with DSL. I don't have AT&T Yahoo so I can't say if their protocols are the same as Bellsouth's or not. I do know the the instructions from Linksys (Answer ID 2210) were different than the steps given on the installation CD so there must be multiple ways to try to get this setup to work. I don't know anything about Tomato or Thibor firmware (I'm using the original supplied with the router) or setting my router as a "bridge", but if you have some suggestions along the lines of upgrading firmware or setting up my modem differently than what is suggested in the 2 information sources I have used, please point me in the right direction. I'd be happy to read specific threads that might help, but haven't found any that deal with my problem directly. I'm sure I followed setup directions correctly (several times) and still have not been able to get it to work.

With ADSL and a router it is advised to put your DSL modem into Bridge mode. this then allows the router (your wrt54g) to handle the adsl connection and not the DSL modem.

what model of Motorola DSL modem do you have?

What version of firmware do you have on your WRT54GL?

I didn't know anything about bridge mode, but with that little tip I searched and found detailed setup info for my modem and router. Everything works great!
