WRT54GL v1.1 not logging on

    Hi All,

Hoping you can help, because this problem is driving me nuts.

I am in the UK connecting with an ISP reseller via ADSLMax (Ace Internet). Running WinXP Pro SP2.

    I have an ADSL2MUE modem bridged to a WRT54GL v1.1 running v4.71.1 Hyperwrt 2.1b1 + Thibor15c.

My router won't login to the net on it's own, but I can login using a WAN Miniport (PPPoE) configured through my Network Connections. I want to login via an Internet Gateway. Why? Checking my router Status Page shows it's disconnected all the time so I don't have any stats, and I couldn't even be sure my Firewall and QoS settings are going to work (because the router thinks it's disconnected). I know this configuration does work, it worked at my last ISP (but I wasn't on a ADSLMax, was on a fixed 1Mb IPStream line). I don't want to have to dial a connection everytime I want net access.

The router is configured to keep the connection alive. If I manually select 'Connect' from the status page after a few attempts it comes up with 'Unable to obtain an IP address from the PPPoE server'.

Modem IP address 192.168.1.1 (the default). Router IP address configured as 192.168.0.1. PC connecting wirelessly via Netgear WG311v2, PC's static IP configured as 192.168.0.2 (I don't want to run DHCP).

There is normally an XBox 360 (192.168.0.3) and two laptops (192.168.0.4 and 5) wirelessly sharing the connection. These are switched off at the moment because I am trying to cut down on what may be causing the problem.

UK ISP's tend to use PPPoA. Router configured as PPPoE, which is correct because it is bridged to the modem. Just in case I have tried 'Automatic Coniguration - DHCP', 'Static IP' and 'PPTP', no joy.

I know there isn't a specific fault on my line because I can login via the WAN Miniport method fine.

I have made sure I am using the correct username and password.

My ISP's normal login is username@isp.net. I have tried changing my login to username%@isp.net and just username as per Linksys' suggestion on their Support site.

I have tried re-flashing with Thibor and clearing the NVRAM on the router in case it was some bizzare screwup. I have not tried re-flashing back to factory firmware. I really want the extra features of Thibor. I am considering flashing to DD-WRT to see if that will fix the problem, but I would rather not have to.

I am wondering if I might have to get involved with setting up a Startup Script? I haven't learnt anything about this so I don't really know.

Has anybody else had this problem? Can anybody help me please? I have run out of ideas to try next.

you have confirmed the settings with your ISP just incase the new service requires some other login?

Thanks very much for replying Toxic.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, it has been a crazy busy couple of days. We had a scheduled powercut on Monday too, and I had to wait for my ADSL2MUE to re-synch to the line. It took three days. I don't think this is directly related to my login problem, it seems to be common to the ADSL2MUE from posts I have read. Once synched it's a really stable connection.

But in answer to your question, yes. I have contacted my ISP to double check my settings. But given that I can login via WAN miniport suggests there isn't anything wrong on my ISP's end, and it appears to be some configuration issue on mine.

I noticed that I can ping from a Windows command prompt but not from the router. So obviously my WRT54GL doesn't think it is logged in.

    Thanks.

    Hi there !
It seems that I have the same problem here.
If I plug the ethernet cable directly in the PC it connects with no fuss but the WRT54GL (with original firmware) does not connect. It tries and after a while it sais it could not get an IP from the pppoe server.
User and password are the same in both situations and to add to the mix an older SMC Baricade Broadband router does in fact connect easily using PPPoE.
Any known solutions to this problem ?

L.E.: I did a firmware update using Thibor and it seems it's working now. Totally wierd...

Problem solved. It seems that introducing the provider name somehow makes the router try to connect only to that provider name. Leave the box empty and it should connect without any problems to the first pppoe provider you have on the net.
