WRT54GL which firmware?

Atm I'm running Speedmod 1.27, Although I've seen teddybears 2.6 kernel builds..

Do these provide any enhanced performance or stability over the 2.4 kernel builds?

Yeah I was also wondering this, there is some documentation here:
    http://tomatousb.org/doc:build-types

However this doesn't tell us whether there is any performance or functionality difference between K24 or K26 for the WRT54GL, can anyone comment?

I'm also interested in this information.
Can you install something else than the K26 NoUSB-std? I thought the WTR54GL had 8Mb...

Victek says his k24 build will be available for download this weekend. I would try it based on past experience with his 1.25 build on a WRT54GL. See the Victek 1.25 thread for info on download location. Again he says this weekend.

Seems like nobody answered the question. There are many stable K24 builds based on v1.23 to 1.25, even 1.27, which would be hard to better. Teddy Bear's firmware can be compiled for K26 and will run on the WRT54GL. I ran it several months ago and it was stable then. It should therefore be very stable now! However, the consensus of opinion is that Kernel 26 is slower, it will never be as fast as Kernel 24 builds. So there's probably no point at all in running it on a GL without a good reason.

    Hi

My observations are that running kernel 26 on my GL results in less available memory that kernel 24, BUT it does not use eat up the remaining memory.

All the original kernel 24 tomato's I tried (prior to TB's), had more available memory, BUT over time it decreased significantly.

As for speed as I am on a relatively slow adsl service, I cannot comment on the efficiency, but it is more stable.

Now if ipv6 can be squeezed in to the std build, I will be a happy girl!!!

Well i used all images, even the VPN one works (duh its less < 4MB). However my router wasn't stable, there was connection freezing (over Ethernet) etc. etc. I returned back to 1.27 Speed-mod, because for some reason WRT54GL stopped working, after turning on and off the wireless client. Since its beta if you are concerned about stability stick with old proven releases.

Just an update I was running 1.27 Speedmod before and performance degraded over time.. I'm on K26 TomatoUSB on WRT54GL and I'm not experiencing any slowdown or speed degradation over time..

I wouldve thought with networking improvements in the 2.6 Kernel it should be equal if not slightly faster than 2.4 ?

Wel, the feedback from both pfoomer and hjf288 is that there may be an improvement in stability with K26. So anyone still using WRT54GL should seriously consider trying it! However, ceckin did not have such a pleasant experience. I wonder why the difference? These are the things that it would be nice to get to the bottom of. Maybe others might try turning the wireless client on and off and see if they can reproduce that particular issue?

Thanks for the info, guys and gals...

So the K26 VPN build works on the WRT54GL. That's good to know.

Well i didn't really test the VPN, cause i don't have the time, but yeah it installs OK. However with the latest beta i found that the router wasn't working good enough (slow connecting with other machines, DNS responses were really slow - had to use my ISP servers directly not through the router, infact some domains were unavailable (like u.115.com)). So it could be just this particular build.

    Questions re your problems...
how are you connecting with the other machines (ftp/http/afp/other), please tell which ports/connection types you are using

Re had to use my ISP servers directly not through the router
    How did you do this?

re u.115.com. connected with no problems, under 2 seconds

Basically web browsing was considerably slower, connecting: wired. The u.115.com i don't know what is it, but its the same deal like microsoft.com - sometimes it not resolvable (when DNS's are like 2ms latency). Stupid yeah, but its true.

Is there any advantage on old routers like the WRT54GL on using a K26 vs a K24 build?

No, k26 in few words, will be slower.

switched back to Shibby's 1.28-108 K24, seems more stable on my WRT54GL
