wrt54gs as AP in large network (255.255.0.0)

I'd like to deploy a few (20) access points (wrt54gs) with static IPs on the same large network (10.0.x.x). I can't find a firmware that will allow me to use the netmask 255.255.0.0 on a network with the WRT54G NOT routing (just an AP). The latest wifibox has 255.255.0.0 as an option on the addressing of the 4 port hub, but the gui says it's out of range when I click apply.

I tried openwrt, but my signal (as measured by netstumbler) varies quite a bit when compared to linksys firmware (where the signal is VERY steady).

Does anybody have any firmware or pointers on how to set these APs up on this network to serve wireless?

    TIA,
    TJ
