WRT54GS in client has less reception than my onboard Wifi?

Pretty much what it says. I have a WRT that I intended to use in Client mode and in place of my onboard wifi card.

The problem Im having is it seems to pick up less stuff than my onboard wifi. And the stuff it does pick up has a weaker signal than my onboard wifi. What gives?

In its defence my laptop when compared to other laptops seems to be excellent at wifi reception. But even given that I would think the Linksys would smoke the onboard unit given its dedicated hardware and large antennas.

I also have a set of hi gain Omni antennas that Im not seeming to get anywhere with.

    Here they are

    Antennas

They are CompUSA branded but I figured I would give em a shot.

I have tried DD-wrt for the client mode, with mixed results. It feels clunky and doesnt seem to to beable to connect much.

I have also tried alchemy. It connects consistently, however It seems to connect to whatever it wants to. Plus the survey thing is slow.

Anybody know of firmware with a great client mode?

Im also looking for some Hi-gain directional antennas that are small and portable and inexpensive.

Anyway any information or suggestions would be great.

    Thanks.

I like the Hawking Tech 15 dBi corner reflector.

Depends on what you are looking for.
