WRT54GS Losing Speed, Can't Fix...Please help!

I've had a WRT54GS (believe it's a V1) for a while now (at least 6 months); used to ahve the G model, but that one crapped out, so I bought this one. I also have it updated to the 4.7 firmware.

I've noticed over the past few weeks that the speed has been getting worse and worse. I've run the ping test in the DOS command prompt for a major website which I used to get nothing more than 50 or so pings on, but now I get over 200. This same thing happened about 10 months ago on the old one, so I called Linksys and they actually fixed the problem by having me do something w/ the MAC address in the DOS command prompt...it was so easy and only took a minute, but now I can't remember what I did. Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I've looked all over these forums and elsewhere, but still can't find any answer to this. I've plugged my computer straight into the modem, and yes, it is definitely the router. Also, being plugged into the router vs wireless doesn't really make much difference in ping. This is driving me crazy, any suggestions? Also, if no one knows what I'm talking about w/ the MAC thing, then any other ideas?
