WRT54GS new Firmware?

    Hi there,

    i got a wrt54gs from a friend with Firmware Version: v3.37.2 - HyperWRT 2.0 on it.
it works fine wired as wireless to surf the inet but e.g. since a week i can´t download any files which are bigger than 1MB  Uploading files via FTP and DYNDNS doesn´t work too. User see their root directory, but as soon as files are transferred the bandwidth goes down to zero. Without the router everything works fine.
Now i wanted to update the firmware to the original Linksys firmware, but everything i receive is a screen with the notice "Upgrade are failed". So with every other firmware :(
Is it possible at all to change the firmware? Or must i do this:Crashed ?
    thanks for every answer!

if you see "Upgrade failed" you have to reboot before trying again. try the latest GS Hyperwrt as it's based on Linksys's code(Thibor13c)

Ongoing 'upgrade / restore failed' issues

Loved the admin functions of 'v4.70.6 - HyperWRT 2.1b1 - Thibor' so thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to 'Hyperwrt_GSv4_Thibor13c.' However, I continue to receive the 'upgrade/restore failed' error screen despite rebooting and hard rebooting and reconfig (saw the backup function a little late into the program). Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    a newbie

    Problem fixed

Sorry for the postings, thought I had v4 but when I sent the email I realized I had v2.1. Downloaded and upgraded with the proper hyperwrt firmware without a hitch.

    Thanks.

As posted below, the firmware for pre-4 versions didn't work on mine, but the one for a version 4 did on my 1.1.

    WRT54GS v 5 firmware

I bought a WRT54GS today and it is a ver 5. I saw many postings to stay away from ver 5 with the WRT54G but no mention of this with the S model not do I see it listed in the comparison charts. Am I screwed with this one? Should I return it and get a different model?

brainslayer said... that he MIGHT try to do something about V5
so.... maybe it worth for you to ask him at his forum .... (donate some to his project?)

He'd have to reverse enigineer in that case, since both v5 of the 54G and 54GS are using VXWorks.

That OS is not opensource like Linux is.

Partly, but not entirely, true. The V5 is running largely the same hardware as the V4, with the major change being the newly castrated memory.

So, on a build-from-scratch model like BrainSlayer's, he MIGHT be able to strip out enough features to get a dumbed-down DD-WRT (that would probably STILL have more features than the native firmware!) installed on the V5 hardware.

So if he could build a Linux-based firmware that can fit in the limited memory of the V5, there still could be aftermarket, but with the limited memory, it's not going to be as good as the V4 and prior.

HyperWRT and some of the other projects use the source code from the native firmware as their base, so they are not going to have aftermarket firmware anytime soon. Given that their initial code base already uses more memory than the V5 units have available, they're stuck.

It is true that aftermarket firmware for the V5's native OS is not possible, or at least would require machine code changes, and not source code changes, and I sincerely doubt anyone wants to put THAT much work into it. ;)

Now, of course, this all assumes that the V5 firmware loader isn't doing some form of signature checking to ensure that the new firmware is VxWorks-based. If that's the case, then it may or may not ever be possible to load anything but official on those beasties.

    Re: WRT54GS v 5 firmware

I returned mine and was able to find 2 version 4 routers at the same store. I plan to install Thibor this weekend.
