Have a WRT54GS hooked to Verizon FIOS in basement and Linksys Range Expander to improve wireless reception (using WEP 64 bit). Worked fine with a Dell laptop and a Linksys card, but then got a second Dell laptop with the internal Centrio based wireless card which would not work with the range expander. Called tech support and they made so many changes to the network that we can't get the range expander working at all. Linksys and Dell say the centrino won't work with the rang expander so I turned off the internal card and purchased another Linksys PCMCIA wireless card. I've spent over 7 hours over a 4 day period with tech support in India (I think) and they are not competent. When I've asked to speak to the supervisors they are constantly having to check with, they transfer the call and it goes nowhere. The laptops are running XP and after some complex procedures we did get the new laptop working on just the router O.K. Then when we went to get the range expander working we got to the point that the laptop could see both the router and the range expander with excellent signal (about 30 feet away), indicating a connection, but when trying to go to the web it wouldn't connect. I had to give up for a few days after failing again to get to someone with the expertise to make this work. Now I've had everything for months and can't return anything! Somehow I still believe this can work.

HELP! Any suggestions are most welcome.

the fact that you were able to connect to the WRE but unable to get online once connected tells me that the WRE is not configured correctly, or your wireless NIC may have had a static IP address set.

In your situation i would recommend reconfiguring the WRE from scratch, give it an IP address like (the router would be and configure the router to give addresses out in the and up range. set it up and make sure the WRE and Router can communicate wirelessly without encryption and only after you get it working from that point, try to setup the encryption. you will have to hook up directly to both of these devices so get everything together. Also to make life easier your going to want to temporarily set your PC's wired NIC with a static IP address so it can communicate with both of these devices while configuring.
