I know the CGN6 units are shipping for the GS,
and I'm staying away from the G CDFB (ver 5) but
are there any serial numbers on the GS side other
than the CGN6 to stay away from if you want linux

The CGN6 models for the "GS" series are still Linux. In fact, they are identical to the WRT54GL or the WRT54G V4.

However, the CGN6 (WRT54GS V4) units have the same 16MB memory as the WRT54G pre-V5 units, as opposed to the 32MB of memory of the previous GS releases.

    WRT54GS V1-3 (all but CGN6..): 32MB memory, Linux.

WRT54GS V4 (CGN6), WRT54G V4 (CDFA), WRT54GL (all) = 16MB memory, Linux, with SpeedBooster chip (non-GS versions can be turned into GS with the right third party firmware).

    WRT54G V3 and prior = 16MB memory, Linux.

So, your most powerful router in terms of memory is the WRT54GS not starting in ser# CGN6.

Your best buy, if you can find one, is a WRT54G V4, since it is a SpeedBooster unit without the price premium. But anything other than the WRT54G V5 (CDFB) is Linux and can run third party firmware. The WRT54G V5 is the only one that I would actively avoid.
