    Hi - I have a WRT54GSUK running firmware 4.70.6 and a WRE54G running firmware 1.04.17. Both have WPA active.

Problem is, my laptop (Toshiba with Atheros AR5005GS) can't seem to figure out which one is the AP and which one is the booster! When I am in range of the booster, it tries to connect directly to the booster as if it's an AP and not a booster.

If I start out in range of the AP and go downstairs to the booster, my laptop will disconnect from the AP and connect to the booster.

Here are some facts that might help:

    1. problem is the same whether WPA is on or off.
    2. have tried multiple resets/reboots/etc.

I'm not all that techie, so any help you can offer would be most appreciated!!

    Thank you in advance.

More info on WRE and WRT fighting it out....

Here's some more info that might be helpful.

    1. WRE has been off for a day. I plugged it back in and lights blink and then turn solid blue.
    2. From upstairs in same room as AP, i can link to 192.168.1.240. pings fine; can access web interface. I go in and turn on SSID broadcast. Then, it refuses to respond. Pinging 192.168.1.240 times out (lights are still steady blue on the WRE).
    3. I move downstairs and my laptop wants to connect directly to the WRE...NO WAIT! it hops back to the AP...NO WAIT! it's back to the WRE again....!!!!! Even when laptop is "connected" to WRE it does not respond to ping or to http://192.168.1.240

This problem began all of a sudden yesterday morning. Things had been working fine for a week and then BAM!!!
