Hi, I've a WRT55AG router (firmware Firmware: 1.04, Jun.30, 2003). I just got a WRE54G but it the setup application keeps on buggering me saying it can't find a wireless card. Did anyone make this combination work or do I need to buy a new router (bad solution).

    Regards,

    Hubert

    Hi hdheer,

I don't think the WRE54G can work with the new WRT55AG, but have you tried putting the WRT55AG at 'G' Mode, and seeing if the WRE54G can connect to your router. :)

The only router or access points that will work with the WRE54G are the WRT54G, WRT54GS, WAP54G and the WAP54GS. These will only work with the appropriate version of the firmware for each.

Ok, I also have a WAP54G lying around somewhere. Can I hook that one up to the WRT55AG (instead of to a modem) and use the WRE54G on the signal which is being broadcasted from the WAP54G??? If I use the same SSID as my existing network on the WAP54G will that create conflicts or not???

As long you do not intend to use WPA-PSK you can use the WAP54G as a repeater itself. An alternative is to connect the WAP54G as a access point and as long as you have version 2.07 firmware on it you can repeat its signal with the WRE54G. In another forum, someone stated that there is beta firmware for the WRE54G available from Linksys if you beg them for it. I do not know what is in the firmware. If you are repeating the WAP54G signal you have to use the same SSID as the WAP54G and channel. Change the SSID on the WAP54G and the WRT55AG so they do not conflict. Channels one, six and eleven do not overlap. You can increase the power output of the WAP54G by using HyperWAP firmware as another alternative.

Well I will explain a bit my home situation. The appartment has 2 levels. On the top level is my ADSL router. This router is connected to the WRT55AG router to serve wireless connectivity to a portable computer, 2 WET54G's (wireless G bridges) and a WPS54G (wireless G Print Server). Also the WRT55AG serves a wired connection to 1 desktop PC.

My connectivity on the ground floor is really bad so I wanted to boost the signal, hence the WRE54G range expander.

I can't use the WAP54G as a access point with a different SSID because this would disable my printing for the wired computer.
What would be the best way to go with current configuration?? Using the WAP54G as a repeater is difficult because I can't / don't want to run a cable from my top floor to my ground floor to place the WAP54G downstairs.
Sorry to make things complicated :?
