First off, apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, looked around but couldn't find anything. I've tried to be as concise and to the point with this post. My Dilemma: I plug into a WRTGS54 v5.1, one other person in my house (X) uses it for wireless, through which he downloads tv programs, movies etc (which I don't) through the steaming sites like youtube and others that I beleive are borderline illegal. I basically just use my connection for playing Day of Defeat (Half life mod) and chatting on teamspeak. I usually get a latency of between 10 and 30ms when X is not downloading films and TV shows etc. When X is downloading stuff, my latency drops to circa 300 - 1000+ms. The game I play uses about 5kb in total, 3 down and 1.5 up on average. What I would like: I need to find a way to give my computer priority to my game. I have tried everything I can think of, assigned a static IP to my computer and gave it priority on the port it was plugged into. Gave as many ports for Steam (the game client) as I could priority in QoS. Limited wireless bandwidth to 1mb. Nothing seems to work! I get the same results every time. Whenever he's downloading his crap, my ping drops very low. It's very frustrating as I hardly use any bandwidth. Any solutions or ideas to this more than welcome. edit: Plus, I have tried "Block sites by url", but this has zero effect.
