WRV200 LAN browsing

    Hi All,

I read the Release Notes of the recent firmwares for this box and there is a note that NetBIOS packets are not forwarded through the tunnel. LMHOSTS file can be a kind of solution but it still does not let the user browse the LAN.

Maybe it is a silly question but as far as I understand the articles I found about NetBIOS it is for legacy systems like WinNT. The more fresh versions like W2k, XP does not need that protocol. So what if I just switch it off? Will then the browsing work between two computers connected with 2 WRV200 devices over a VPN tunnel?

    Any comment is welcome.

Well you are right they do not need the protocol as Windows OS post NT (anything win2k or later) uses DNS for name resolution by default. Though NetBios will be used for machine name resolution when DNS is unavailable. Now back to lan browsing, you can and always have been able to browse the lan via ip, just not by name unless you run your own DNS or change your LMHOSTS file to reflect the hosts on the other side of the tunnel.
