I have been desperately looking for alternate WRV54G firmware, but it seems that none of the developers are touching this router with a 10 foot pole. I really would like to have a firmware with QoS and better VPN support in it. ....and if I am over looking firmware already out there with QoS and better VPN support, please point me in the right direction.

    Thank you.

Anything is better than this mess

Do you think the WRV54G needs better/alternate firmware?

Yes. The firmware vendors should directly approach the BOINGO Marketing VP that signed onto this product (abandoned by Cisco) -- Easy Message:

Cisco/Linksys has abandoned your "project" and your hopes of spreading WiFi "HotSPots" with this product. Late firmware updates?

Don't take Cisco to court - fund a competing firmware offering for the hardware with open source.
Business "sometimes" wakes up when they see competition (real or imagined - BTW) -- and finally understand their customer - rather than wasting time with Wall Street (stock price going no where).

No point doing a "Don Quixote" on this. Linksys is a big windmill to tilt at and the WRV54G has only 8 MB of flash anyway. There's a similar thread somewhere here on Linksysinfo.org (Yeah, I was surprised at the meagre flash, too). The WRV54G's shortcomings have been beaten to death and beyond. There's no point flogging this dead horse anymore. Frankly I (like you) am sick of Linksys' lack of follow-through on what could have been an immensely capable box. Alternate firmware? Don't hold your breath.

If you're half way handy with a JTAG interface you can flash any number of development firmwares obtainable on the Jungo website to the WRV54G. Jungo, in case you didn't know, are the developers of the WRV54G firmware. The same firmware works on number of different platforms.
