As a total (elderly) newbie to networking, in particular wireless networking, can anyone tell me (politely) whether I could use this adapter to connect a USB laser printer to my current wireless network? I'm using a Netgear DG834G router as my access point.

No it is meant to connect a computer and not a printer. You can use a WPS54G print server, but it is not compatible with all USB printers. Which printer do you have. Check this thread:

You can also buy a Netgear WGPS606 printserver, which supports up to two USB printers and acts as a bridge to connect up to four PCs or a DLink DP-G321, which supports up to two USB printers and one parallel port printer.

I thought this might be the case, but decided to check as I could well have been wrong! Thanks for all the information.
