ytimg.com & Feedburner.com getting blocked

    I am having a problem with my Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 w/ Tomato 1.25.

I'm not sure of the exact timing but I noticed on Saturday that thumbnails for Youtube do not load. I also have an Outlook html signature that points to my Feedburner feed however a red X appears where the signature should reside in a new email message.

I've had a similar issue in the past with ESET Smart Security suite arbitrarily blocking my feedburner signature. A reinstall of ESET fixed the problem, however that is not the case now. I then looked at AdBlock Plus in Firefox. I disabled it and still no Youtube thumbs. It's definitely not the plugin because IE also fails to load YT thumbs as is the case on all other networked pc's. So, upon further troubleshooting it appears all my local machines don't load the Youtube thumbnails either so my focus is now on the router. I tried flashing to a different firmware version with no luck. I'm not aware of any individual site blocking in Tomato.

What else in Tomato could be causing this blockage?

a bit of an update. Went into Advanced-->DHCP/DNS and added this to the "dnsmasq" section:

Now all Youtube thumbs seem to load and my Feedburner signature is now loading in Outlook. I do notice that i3.ytimg.com and feeds2.feedburner.com have the same ip address. How is that possible?

This is only a workaround because if these items are somehow blocked by the tomato router then I'm sure other items are blocked too, I just haven't come across them yet. Wish I knew what was blocking these items so I could just reset that setting in the router.

just another update. While my workaround seems to work in most cases. I'm still seeing Youtube pages load very slowly as it accesses various YT cache and image servers. Some videos fail to even load or start playing. I get an "error has occurred" message appear on top of the video frame.

So, if anyone has any ideas what the roadblock might be in the router I would appreciate any thoughts.

I had this problem using OpenDNS, so I switched over to the Speakeasy DNS servers and everything works.

some of these sites use cdn delivery. dns lookup will return an ip address that is optimal to your isp's dns. thus if your router is configured to opendns or some other dns, the ip addresses returned might be optimal only to opendns ip addresses.

as a result, you may get super slow responses, especially if you're not in usa or anywhere close to opendns' network. google does the same content delivery trick with youtube as well. thus it is actually bad advice in terms of performance to advocate the use of opendns when your own isp's dns works perfectly fine.
