i had the old b router that worked fine. Consistent signal strength, consistent speed etc. Meaning it wouldnt go from 8mbps to 1mbps in a flash. Just got the new compact 54gc router and speed is an issue. Bought so i would gain speed. Nothing has changed except this router. I sometimes get 48mbps to 32mbps but often goes right down to 11mbps and often to 1mbps in places very close to the router. Other then a wall, nothing is in the way. Performance just sucks and im not used to it. Sometime it drops the whole connection. THe signal strength never shows less the 4 bars.

Running XP on the HP laptop with an integrated HP 450 wireless card. Just not used this poor performance when i was using the B router. Any help?

There is a hidden port for an external Antenna, SMA connection, try putting one of those on, it might help you with your speed and distance issues

Thanks. I actually tried that without much success. Its weird. Some time i can be on a different floor and it flies. Other times i be in the room next to it and i cant even connect.

i bought and returned wrt54gc.... i used it for about 4 days... worked well... but the wireless singal strenght was alot better with internal antenna than a 5.5dbi antenna attached to the external antenna port... signal strength was at about -60dBm vs. -80dBm with external antenna......(used netstumbler to measure)

    go figure!
