I have a WRT350N v1 that I use for my main router with no complaints. I am in need of a switch for my AV closet and figured a cheap router would work plus give me a wireless access point. I bought a WRT54G v4 off of ebay to use for this purpose. I'd like to put DD-WRT on it (mainly because I can...) and use it to expand my wireless coverage and also use it as a switch.

My main question is this... If I put DD-WRT firmware on it, but my main router (connected to cable modem, NAS box) DOESN'T have DD-WRT, am I going to see any benefit?

I'm open to ideas on how to set this up. Thanks!

You'll get all the benefits of ddwrt and the stability of third party firmware. Though i believe i read somewhere recently the latest dd-wrt is having stability issues, i have v23 running on one device and its been up for months now.

So I can run two routers with different firmware? Any idea how to set this up?

Yes you can, depends on what you want to do, but there are lots of guides and strings here if you search around a little bit. If you give it a good effort and still have issues, post again and someone will help.
