Hi! I know very little about routers but my friend is having a problem with his (he knows even less) so I thought I would come here to ask my probably simple, dumb question.

My friend has a Linksys Wireless B 2.4 GHz 802.11b (BEFW11S4, ver. 4). He is getting the message, "Type in your network key (also called a WEP or WPA key)." He's never encrypted his router (which I know he should) so he doesn't know what to type here when it asks for this. (I have an encryption key that I use with my router and all my networked devices, but he hasn't done this.)

Can anyone please tell me what to tell him to type in when the router asks for his network key?

That's it. Thanks for not flaming me for my ignorance! I appreciate any help anyone can give me with this. Thanks for your time.

Just remeber everyone started somewhere. Have him not put any key and just hit enter. Sounds like his windows settings got messed up. If it does not take that somehow he got a key in place, could be just about anything so I would have him reset the router to factory defaults and then go in and change the setting to whatever he likes. Factory defaults is attained by holding in the reset button for about 20 seconds, releasing it then letting the router reboot.

Welcome to the forums and ask away............. which is the way we all learn.

There is no such thing as a "stupid" question..................... well there is, only when it is never asked. Then you feel stupid for not asking and never learnig anything.
