I would like to set the wireless mode to Afterburner mode ONLY, meaning that non-Afterburner clients should not be able to talk to the router.

I tried setting G only mode and Afterburner to On but non-Afterburner clients can still connect.

Under Wireless -> Advanced I can see 3 options for Afterburner: Auto/On/Off, I thought On would mean it's the only mode whereas Auto would allow both.

I thought that afterburner was universal and not linksys specific. For example.. the dlink, usrobotics, 108mbps and 125mbps and the netgear 108mbps are brand specific and you have to have their client to get their speed. But with linksys you can use afterburner on any g client. thats what i thought, but maybe i'm wrong...

Afterburner is Broadcom specific, which is the chip the WRT54GS uses. The manufacturer/brand doesn't matter, it's the chip inside that matters.

i dont think that the wrt can do this. the wrt i dont think can tell the difference between speed booster clients and non speed booster clients. try to use mac address filter to allow the speed booster clients in and the non speed booster clients out.
