Any HyperWRT advantage for amateurs?

I have read a fair amount on this forum about different firmware. Most of the discussion is over my head. Is there any advantage from using third-party firmware, like HyperWRT, for someone like me? It seems that much of the advantage of the firmware is the ability to tweak settings. However, I question whether I would ever tweak anything. Its like when my wife or daughters discuss shades of color. Like many males, I deal only with basic colors.

In other words, does third-party firmware offer any speed or performance advantage? Is its appeal based solely on its flexibility?

By the way, I am using a Linksys WRT54G router.

The main reason I switched was to get Static DHCP capability and a couple of other minor features not available with the stock firmware (such as better logging). Your needs may not match anything it offers, but if they do then you'll be happy with the switch.

boosting the wireless signal is the main feature over the original firmware tbh.

As an amateur I like to add the ON/OFF button for wireless, the script for wireless access, the statistics and the device list.
