Any router with 1000mW built in amplifier supported by tomato?

    I can find few 1000mW amplified access points on the market, but from brands never heard before. Is anybody aware of any 1000mW router where I can run Tomato? I'm trying to establish a long range connection...

    Why not just get amplified antennae, so you can reuse them towards future routers... it's a smarter investment.

    The Bountiful series is supported by DD-WRT.
    I don't know of any with Tomato, not as of yet anyway.

    Bear in mind that amplification is typically required for long-haul point-to-point connections (i.e. two routers bridged wirelessly over very long distances), and absolutely MUST be present on _both_ ends of the connection. In the home, typically, the limiting factor is the strength of the signal being sent by individual laptops/devices, not the router itself...increasing strength at the router does nothing to solve the return-path issue.

    Thanks Rodney, that's exactly how I was planning to use it, but i need to do some testing first as I'm crossing few buildings between the two endpoints

    Crossing buildings as in going through them? If so, good luck, because those are going to cause huge attenuation.

    One thing you probably want to look at is high-gain directional antennas. Increasing the power output is one thing, but for a point-to-point link, that power only needs to go in a very tight beam, so you can get a lot of effective gain that way. I'm not sure if that's what @xtacydima meant with "amplified antennae", but I'm talking about totally passive devices.

    Another possibility for you is a separate power amplifier between the router antenna connector and the actual antenna itself. It's not integrated into the router, but it provides the same functionality.

    I'm aware of that that's why I said I need to do some test. I was thinking to buy 2 of these:
    They are quite cheap, and I was thinking to fit them on the roof of the houses, still no line of sight but it should be much better then on the ground floor.
    Over here in the UK the ground is almost never even... the whole country is a bunch of low hills and the landscape goes up and down as a consequence.
    Any ways, I was thinking to test first with alpha usb nic (1000mW) then switch to tomato AP if and when connection is established.
    The external amplifier sounds good, they just seem quite expensive for what they offer though...

    At these frequencies, if you are not "line of sight" then the range really is severely limited. What you could do is to search for a program used by Radio Hams, showing the topography - I think it had "Terrain" in the title. Usually this will immediately show the feasibility of the link. Commercial programs are usually too expensive. TBH, most links in the UK have to be done using a chain of repeating sites on raised ground. You can get usful tips from googling "Ham Radio / Packet Radio Systems". Beware also of claimed gain figures with many of the commercially available antennas - they are simply not true.
