When restoring mac address you used burnethermac? If so do you include the ":" or not. Thanks in advance.

Yes, burnethermac. I did not include ":". Procedure is very safe.

Anyone using latest FW (384) having any WiFi drop issues? The 2.4 will randomly drop, it can work for an hour and all sudden my devices won't connect. After a few minutes it comes back on. I updated the region to US last night & dia a complete power cycle so im testing to see if this helps .... thanks

Thanks for this project, very excited to get things working.

Flash of 384.4_2 worked fine, but I don't seem to have many of the tabs for things like Parental Control or Traffic Manager to get all the pretty charts.

I verified the options are enabled in advanced settings, and did see a few posts back the direct links which do work, so it is running. Any ideas why I don't get the menu tabs?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi all new to forum, i been using Xwrt-Vortex on my Netgear R7000 for a while now, recently upgraded to 384.4.* everything works fine from what i can tell but one problem, every now and again, i cant access router on 10.0.0.1 last time it happened was when 384.4 came out and Core 1 was always at 100% then failed to let me access it, only way i can gain access is to restart router, and then does it again a few days later, i have tried factory resetting it and putting setting back i had not via file, any one else having this issue?

#1 How did you know cpu1 was at 100% if you couldn't access it?
#2 When it was at or near that high value, did you have top running to see which process's were eating the cpu cycles?
#3 what process was eating the cycles and can you kill the process from the command line to see if that settles the cpu?

It sounds like you have a runaway process. You need to run top and see what process is eating the cpu cycles. Once you determine what is the cause, you can formulate a plan of action to mitigate the problem.

From last time i had the issue, i was on router homepage and core 1 was on 100% when i tried to load a page on the router it was stuck on waiting for 10.0.0.1 and core 1 was showing 100%, as for #2 i can't do it as i have no access to the router at all.

  10. slidermike

    slidermike Addicted to LI Member

You said you regained access by rebooting the router.
At that point you should be able to enable a ssh session.
Similar to how you had a gui page open & saw it at 100%, you should be able to keep an ssh window open and run top.
That is the best I have for you.

Another interesting thing may be to check the syslog on the JFFS partition. May be lucky and see an interesting event.

Or send your syslog to papertrail.com so when it happens next you can see.

May not help, but may get lucky.

Did you follow these steps on your router?

First, you have to go into Tools > Other Settings. Scroll down to ASUS Features, select toggle Enable BWDPI to Yes and click Apply Settings. Then reboot your router.

I tried to use telnetenable2 tool, but it did not work for me as well.
So I googled and found older version of "telnetenable" (version 1). And it worked surprisingly well, with Netgear R7000.
    https://github.com/insanid/NetgearTelnetEnable
To use it please do as follows:
    1. Go to http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm. You may need to use your router login.
    * check "dev" and press "Restart RA Process".
    * Reboot router via http://192.168.1.1/start.htm -> Advanced -> Advanced home -> Reboot.
    2. Once router reboots, open cmd (with administrator rights) in a folder where you unpacked telnetenable.zip
    type this:
    telnetenable.exe <IP> <MAC> <Username> <Password>

<IP> - It is IP of router homepage, by default it is 192.168.1.1
<MAC> It is mac adrress of your router ethernet port / Wifi 2.4 GHz / Wifi 5GHz, depends how you connect to your router. !! It is not mac of your PC !! MAC has to be written without ":".
    <Username> - 'admin'
<Password> - Your password you set in web interface, by default it is set to 'password'.

Once you activate this command - you will get message "Telnet enabled".
    3. Via cmd (with administrator rights) type (you may need to install telnet feature via "Turn Windows features on or off"):
    telnet
    (you will enter telnet console).
    o 192.168.1.1
(you will connect to your router via telnet).
    to exit connection type: exit
to exit telnet console type: quit
    to exit CMD type: exit
    4. When you are done go again to http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm , enable "prod" and click "Restart RA process".

Found this post by Pagla in the snb forums, lets hope next update has an improvement to wifi on 2.4:

"There is a also a separate thread for people with AC3200 that are having wifi connectivity issues with 384.4 and 384.4_
    https://www.snbforums.com/threads/ac-3200-384-4-update-wifi-connectivity-issue.45547/

According to that thread some people have gone back to 384.3 and the wifi issue is resolved." Original post by Pagla

Whatever I need to stop me being stuck on the uploaded stock netgear firmware and return the router region to Europe.
I tried the burn board id but didn't get any message to confirm it has done anything.

I understand the xwrt firmware has probably changed serial number and mac etc so I kind of want to get it back to how it back to proper stock etc

    Terijan01 Network Newbie Member

Once you connect to router via SSH / Telnet, please do these commands:
    burnboardid
(it will show current vallue. If you see some random symbols - this setting is corrupted by XWRT 384.4 NG FW)
    burnboardid U12H270T00_NETGEAR
(this command will write correct setting for Netgear R7000)
(In general Netgear routers boardid is written in start of stock FW *.chk file, please open it with HEX editor)
    burnsn
(it will show serial number of your router. If you see some random symbols - this setting is corrupted by XWRT 384.4 NG FW)
    burnsn 0000000000000
(real serial number is located at the bottom of your router, please look it up)
    burnethermac
    (displays Ethernet LAN MAC address)
    burnethermac 0070C27A4485
(default correct vallue of Ethernet LAN MAC address)
    burnsku 0x0002
(It will set Wifi region to World wide, if you would like to change from US region to any other region via web interface. By default you are locked to US region)
    nvram set pci/0/1/macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:85
    nvram set et0macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:85
    nvram set pci/1/1/macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:85
    nvram set 0:macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:85
    nvram set pci/2/1/macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:84
    nvram set 1:macaddr=00:70:C2:7A:44:84
    nvram commit

(these nvram commands are optional. If you check your router MAC address via linux interface (terminal) you will see that some MAC is not written "MAC incomplete". These nvram commands will correct this error.)
    nvram erase && reboot
(It will erase some empty and corrupted vallues in nvram settings. It is mandatory command if you want to install any FW. Close manually SSH / Telnet window only when router boots up by pressing [X] in top right corner.)

You will be able to install any FW you want (via web interface) Tomato / DD-WRT / XWRT / Upgrade to newer stock FW.
Primary object was to solve issue "Stuck to stock FW" on Netgear R7000. Everything else is less important.

    http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm
    http://routerlogin.net/debug.htm
Are the same debug pages for Netgear routers.
Apparently you have different address for debug page.
In general in debug page you enable development mode.
If you skip step 1 are you still able to connect to router via telnet?
If not - you will have to find a work around.
My apologies if for some of you it did not work as expected.
Solution provided by me was mainly for Netgear R7000 (also other Netgear routers).
XWRT FW also works on Linksys EA6900, Huawei WS880.
*In my opinion that user [emer1] owns Linksys or Huawei router, moved to stock FW and got stuck with it.*
Afterall solution/fix should be provided by XVortex, who creates and develops XWRT FWs (also made this issue) and not by some random guy :)

That's because your still on the xVortex rMerlin code.
the error 404 means the page doesn't exist.
Your trying that at the wrong stage of the process.
You first have to revert back to the stock firmware previously listed.
netgear firmware has the debug.htm, not rMerlin.

404 code means: "Page you are trying to view do not exists."
Netgear FW Version 1.0.3.80_1.1.38 answers all questions.
It is an older version of stock FW and may not have debug page.
However it is still possible to fix issue "Stuck to stock FW".
You need USB-ttl adapter 3.3V version, I would prefer to buy with wires.
In amazon store they sell them with 5 pins but actually you will need only 4 pins (5th pin is for 5 volts).
At the moment you have bricked router at software level.
Without USB-ttl adapter you are stuck with bricked router permanently.
My apologies I could not provide a better way solve it :)

OK, I have had the same issue as the last couple of pages. I went back to DD-WRT to try some new builds after flashing back to stock with the burnboardid command. The issue I am having is that now is whenever i make configuration changes in dd-wrt, save and apply everything works fine. Reboot and it goes back to defaults every time. Some other issue that loads at boot triggers this. Through the serial ttl connection I get this output after the +'s and X's. Notice the "nvram erase" after the first set. Is their some flag that is set somewhere in which i can just edit out. I have SSH and Telnet capability. This is bugging the crap out of me.

    You are an absolute star!!

Is there a command to burn in the default SSID's and password for both 2.4 and 5Ghz bands?

  31. Terijan01

    Terijan01 Network Newbie Member

There are burn commands (for stock FW) that will write password/SSID directly to CFE (in general CFE is like a BIOS of your PC):
    Wifi 2.4GHz (for example):
    burnpass MyPassword
    burnssid Home2-4GHz

    Wifi 5GHz (for example):
    burn5gpass MyPassword
    burn5gssid Home5GHz

Also it is possible to write settings to nvram. If you do router reset all nvram settings returns to default. Some of them will be taken from CFE as default.
    Wifi 2.4GHz SSID:
    nvram set wl0_ssid=YourSSIDwifi2-4GHz
    Wifi 5Ghz SSID:
    nvram set wl1_ssid=YourSSIDwifi5GHz
    Wifi 2.4GHz password:
    nvram set wl0_wpa_psk=MyPassword
    Wifi 5GHz password:
    nvram set wl1_wpa_psk=MyPassword
    Save settings
    nvram commit

But actually other firmwares (except stock FW) will not read stock CFE. At the moment I use Tomato FW. It runs custom CFE (1.0.22) and all settings are saved in nvram.

In case you would like to see all available burn commands, please do this:
    cd /sbin
    ls burn*

If I am on 384.4 and want to go back, what I need to do are
    - flash "back to stock" firmware
    - update CFE with burn commands with board ID, SN & MAC
    - flash latest stock FW

You need to flash R7000-V1.0.9.26_10.2.31.trx (it is latest stock FW),
    Fix corrupted settings.

So I tried to go back to stock from 384.4 NG ran into the same problems as everyone else and can't upgrade past stock. Am i correct to think if i don't purchase proper cable as mentioned in the posts above as i'm unable to enable telnet to perform burnboardid, i'm pretty much SOL? I'm unable to change the channel on the 5ghz radio on this stock firmware :(

You don’t need the cable, just enable telnet as people describe and run the three burn commands and you should be good to go.

Thanks but i can't flash that firmware as I flashed the old back to stock version a couple days back, once i tried upgrading out of this "v1.0.3.80_1.1.38" is when i was presented the Firmware Invalid error. I can't flash any .chk files to progress to the latest netgear firmware or anyfirmware for that matter.

So looking up the issue online brought me to this forum, so here i am ;)

Build 384.4_2 - Can't get QoS to work.

Tried factory defaults and reconfigure. Tried to disable QoS and App Analysis, Reboot, Enable QoS, Enable App Analysis..

    Log shows:

kernel: ERR[parse_qos_conf:932] Can't set new QoS conf while QoS is started!
    kernel: ERR[ioctl_iqos_op_config:3592] parse qos_conf error!!
    kernel: ioctl_iqos_op_config() fail!
kernel: ERR[qos_start:3344] QoS is already started!
    kernel: ioctl_iqos_op_switch(1) fail!

QoS - Traffic classification Statistics page show all zeros.

Buffer bloat very high which means QoS is not working at all.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    Hi,

many thanks Vortex for your work.

    I've some questions :
do you think it's possible to adapt the Asus mobile app or do some modifications to increase the compatibility ?
If you need money for doing the change, how many $$ do you need ? Pehaps we can do something. :)

For all, when login on the Webui, the ui seems to not loading properly. I've to refresh the page to have it all. Every page are slow to load, even when i'm connected from wire. I'm using chrome on windows 10. I've 2 PC. I've the same behavior on both of them.

    and, again, thanks.

Tried to enable iMesh to set my secondary router, now configured as media brigde, as an AIMesh node.
The AiMesh main router detects it but pairing fails everytime.

Same here : I think that when the secondary router is reset on the pairing process, he lost the amas_force setting

The AiMesh router discovers the node but it has the wrong MAC Address.
When I set the secondary router as AiMesh node it resets itself and lost my settings for correcting mac address, serial, etc...
I'm sticking with original CFE (v1.0.0.0) so, from what I understood about, I didn't lost my original settings like serial, MAC addresses, etc, and I don't need to do the "burnssid" etc procedure. Is it right?

So it's happening again, but only seems to do it when connection is being hammered, i was only using half the bandwidth down when it happened, i have 400 Meg down and 20 Meg up, image i posted when it happened.

You pretty much gave yourself the answer storm.
Heavy packet load is causing the system to work hard. It doesn't have enough cycles to service your mgmt. request.
    See below
    https://askubuntu.com/questions/7858/why-is-ksoftirqd-0-process-using-all-of-my-cpu

Back a year or two I used to run a load balance command similar to the examples in the above article on dd-wrt & r7000.
Back then, Kong had not enabled a better software based load balance between the 2 cpu.
Most of cpu0 was heavy hit while cpu1 was sitting nearly idle at high load.

dunno about your particular configuration but you could try disabling any service/feature that requires each packet to hit the cpu for processing. Such services include (but not limited to) QoS & Parental Controls.
    VPN is also cpu intensive.
When I get home I can try to dig out my old dd-wrt commands I ran from the shell and share them.
They may or maynot help you.
Basically you can assign certain tasks to a specific cpu.
I was giving my 5ghz radio traffic to cpuX and 2.4ghz traffic to cpuY.

Has anyone running 384 seen any AIProtect events logged?

I have it enabled and never seen any events. It wouldn’t surprise me if the internal checks inside AIProtect detect the router and do nothing. Just curious if others have seen events.

    @Almighty1, @KingP1n, @GDT78, @sky441,

    About AiMesh

I assume that you have at least two R7000 devices.

I wonder if you went through the same process as I did? With the original release of R7000_380.70 and R7000_384.4, I went ahead and installed the firmware on both of my R7000 devices (regrettably without making a CFE backup). The first problem I noticed was with WiFi connectivity. When I discovered that both routers used the same set of mac address, none of which was consistent with the labels found on the base of the devices I knew that that something really bad had happened. I have since then upgraded the devices with XVortex custom CFE, but I feel slightly reluctant to try R7000_384.4_2 just yet.

I wonder if your bad AiMesh experiences might have to do with conflicting mac addresses? KingP1n seems to be the odd one out, without problems.

Can someone who is still running 380.xx do a ifconfig command by telnet/ssh and post about what it shows for the HWAddr for each of the interfaces br0, eth0, eth1, eth2 and vlan1. Are br0, eth0, eth1 and vlan1 all identical and only eth2 is different? If not, can you just post the last two numbers for each one. This is what mines looks like, just strange the LAN and WAN has the same MAC address:

    admin@NETGEAR-R7000:/tmp/home/root# ifconfig
    br0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:78
This appears to be the LAN IP address
    eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:78
This appears to be the WAN IP address
    eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:78
    eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:7A
    vlan1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:78

    Thanks!

I only have one R7000 and I just wanted to enable the feature just to see what happened. As for the MAC Address and the serial number and the boardid, I already fixed that before that happened as indicated in a earlier post.

    Thanks guys,

I was hoping to find an explanation as to why AiMesh seemed to work for some, but not for others.

It's probably still just a half baked feature, victim of marketing and hype. Impressive if they can make it work reliably. Cool video though.

I can confirm it is the same:
    br0 xx:xx:xx:xx:97:61
    eth0: xx:xx:xx:xx:97:61
    eth1: xx:xx:xx:xx:97:61
    eth2: xx:xx:xx:xx:03:04
    vlan1: xx:xx:xx:xx:97:61

Interestingly, eth2 is nothing like the rest.

@XVortex - Tiny bugs i've found with NG Branch: 384.4_2 on an R7000

    * If you remove the ethernet cable for the modem, then place it back in, the LED light will go orange, blink a little in white, then turn off, in the UI the router say its connected to the internet, but the LED stays off for the internet,

    * the system log page "/Main_LogStatus_Content.asp" locks up, and the menu buttons never load, you have to close the tab and open a new one going back to the UI

I know in that thread, early on, there were talks of particular CFE version checks that were being made in order for AiMesh to actually be available or not. Not sure if that was coming into play here.

After testing R7000_384, I went back to Tomato. To my surprise the Internet LED then gave a solid amber light. According to Netgear this happens when: "The router has detected an Ethernet cable connection to the modem."

    https://kb.netgear.com/23991/What-a...the-front-panel-of-my-Nighthawk-router-called

Prior to the R7000_384 installation (on Tomato) the Internet LED positively shone white with internet access established. Afterwords, it still shines white while on Asus-Merlin by XVortex and Netgear Genie, but not on Tomato. As far as I can tell, all three firmwares work well. All basic functions are functional. I haven't dug deeper.

I upgraded the CFE with a few different mac address settings on three occasions. Primarily because the mac address used by Asus-Merlin and Netgear Genie was different to those used by Tomato. These changes made no difference to the colour of the Internet LED, nor did they have any ill effects (as far as I can tell) on the device.

The WAN speed is still gigabit. I have swapped out the network cables, no change. I have two R7000 devices and they both ran R7000_384 and therefore behave identically.

I'm scratching my head wondering what have happened. The colours are there for a reason, to alert the user of a change in behaviour. If someone can shed some light on this mystery, I'm all ears.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I also took the steps provided by user Terijan01 in post #5420, correcting corrupt R7000 specific settings.

    Will EA6900 also get a 384 release ?

    --- Edit ---
I now managed to find out that all support other than R7000 is currently dropped.

What would be required to maintain the ea6900 section like you mentioned earlier ?

    @stormw4tch3r

First go back one step to R7000-380.70_0

Then I would take this route. Just imagine that you are on Tomato instead of Asuswrt-Merlin.

    http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26ARM/Netgear R-series back to OFW/

If you are on XVortex custom CFE you can reset the nvram via emergency recovery mode, the VTX CFE miniWeb Server. If not, use the reset button. Ether way you'll use the reset button. From boot to enter emergency recovery mode. Hot if the device is on factory cfe.

The last step is installing the latest version of Netgear Genie for R7000.

    http://netgear.com/support/product/r7000.aspx#download

    Good luck

I done all that but only problem i have now is that when i try upgraded to latest version i get this error message "This firmware file is incorrect! Please get the firmware file again and make sure it is the correct firmware for this product." when i have downloaded the R7000 firmware from netgear site.

So, just to validate what I've been reading in the last four or so pages:

    - I reverted back from ASUSWRT to Stock (V1.0.3.80_1.1.38) using the "revert" version in the first page a couple of weeks ago
    - From that point forward, I can no longer upgrade to any other version, it keeps saying "Invalid version"
    - One solution involves being able to ssh (edit: sorry, meant telnet) into the router, but that requires enabling some kind of debug mode at http://192.168.1.1/debug.htm, but that page does not exist on the version I'm running right now
    - Conclusion: there's only one way to fix the state my router is in right now, and that's by purchasing a special cable and open up the router to connect straight to the motherboard.

Is that conclusion correct? (I hope not, but am afraid it is)

Telnet into the router, not Secure Shell (SSH). You will probably need Putty for that.

    https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/latest.html

If debug mode doesn't work. Try without. Maybe the custom CFE has something to do with it.

    https://github.com/insanid/NetgearTelnetEnable/blob/master/binaries/windows/telnetenable.exe

    telnetenable.exe <IP> <MAC> <Username> <Password>

    telnetenable 192.168.1.1 112233445566 admin password

<MAC> is the mac address for your lan port without separators ":".

Take a look att post #5415 provided by user Terijan01 on this very page

The problem isn't the custom CFE, from what I gather from other posts, it's simply that my stock ASUS firmware is too old, it didn't have a debug mode yet. Also, others posted trying to telnet without enabling (or being able to enable) debug mode, and that doesn't work, unfortunately.

I'm going to try later today, but so far, it indeed looks like there's no way to recover without a USB/TTL cable in my specific situation.

If you followed the steps outlined for you, you should be on a transitionary version on Netgear Genie: R7000-back-to-ofw.trx

    http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26ARM/Netgear R-series back to OFW/

Make sure that the DCHP-server on your router assigned a dynamic IP-address to your PC: ipconfig /all

The default address of the router ought to be 192.168.1.1. You can also try to ping it.

    Try without debug-mode.

Interesting you have a eth2 that is not even related to the eth0, eth1 and vlan1 just like sydneyrob, I wonder if that one is actually set by XWRT or not. Did you create the vlan2 because I thought that one wasn't a standard interface.
