    Congrats ollimo.
I know Merlin has said that Asus is going to more and more closed source. So that probably explains the loss of some of the finer control.
    Good luck!

Well - too early to congratulate. After a disappointing wireless performance I decided to return the ac88U and go back to my R7000 - yet on 380.70. Is there an wireless limits on the NG version? Otherwise I may decide to upgrade next couple of weeks.

Give it another try - does anbody know if there is changes to how wireless signal strength is being controlled between 380.70 (increase in percentage 0 -100%) and 384.7 NG versions? Is it still possible to scale in percentages? Thank you for your feedback.

Has this feature ever worked? It's never done anything on my router.

Excellent question - Especially for the 2.4GhZ range I can see a difference if I turn the signal from e.g. 25% power to 75% - signal strength seem to increase accordingly. Reason for asking is that on the ac88u on Merlin I could only do change 4 stages between Normal - Good - Excellent - Power. On top the transmit power was limited to legal regional limits and not to what the HW is capable to do.

I believe that Asus removed the actual control of the routers TX some time ago.
It might still be accessible via command line.
This is from an older thread (google is your friend).
    nvram set wl_txpower=1 (Slider)
    nvram set wl0_txpower=1 (2.4GHZ)
    nvram set wl1_txpower=1 (5GHZ)

    nvram commit
    reboot

    Values: 1 to 100

Thanks slidermike - as stated the ac88u was returned to sender due to various limits which did not justify the invest. Therefore I am happy to stick with my R7000 for a while and was wondering if there is any negative impact to anticipate cutting over to NG release.

I dont think this is working,... i would really appreciate this feature or have old OpenDns features back. 3 kids at home i have to make sure `bad` sites are blocked :D

Even though AI Protection doesn't work, is there any reason why you can't use DNS filter to direct their DNS to OpenDNS Family Shield - https://www.opendns.com/home-internet-security/

Why can't I install Diversion on my R7000 with xwrt? I enabled custom JFFS scripts, put the command in SSH, I get:

    echo: Sorry, wrong platform.
echo: Diversion cannot be installed on this device.

Is it still somehow possible? Is xwrt afterall somehow different than Merlin?

i have diversion running on 384.7 with no problems, but i installed it awhile ago,
u could try run this from ssh,

    ``
    cd "$HOME"
    /usr/sbin/curl -Os https://diversion.ch/diversion/4.0/diversion
    chmod 0755 "$HOME/diversion"
    rm -f "$0"
exec "$HOME/diversion" or just run ./diversion
    ``

    It is a no go...

    After I execute:

    chmod 0755 "$HOME/diversion"

    I get:

chmod: /root/diversion: No such file or directory

  14. Sl4fko

    Sl4fko Network Newbie Member

    These were my steps:

    1) I formated 8GB usb stick into ext2 and plug it into USB 2.0 on my router
    2) Enabled custom jffs scripts
    3) Tried to execute commands, first from diversion home page, then from above.

    "Sounds good, doesn't work"

There was an "auto" transmit power option in original R7000 firmware.
Is there also an "auto" transmit power option in XWRT? I can only see a slider from 0-100%

Thoughts on using the R7000 as only a router (Turn off WiFi).
I'd like to install two Ubiquiti AC Pro AP's (1st and 2nd floor). However, not interested in buying the Ubiquiti (Unifi) controller. Would love to keep my R7000 as the brains and run a switch (with POE) off the R7000. Possible? Good idea? Pro's/Con's?

I would think an added benefit (turning off WiFi) would be reduced temperatures. I have no idea if it would make a difference.

    Thoughts would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Newbie here with xwrt-vortex so apologies for what may be answered elsewhere, but I have been looking honestly.

What i am trying to determine is whether I can upgrade from Tomato 1.28.0000-140 K26ARM USB AIO-64K on an R7000 directly to xwrt-vortex, or whether I need to reflash with stock firmware first?

Some articles I read suggest you can upgrade directly from Tomato to xwrt-vortex, and others seem to suggest that you have to reflash back to stock.

Can you experienced people enlighten me as i don't want to brick the device.

    many thanks in advance

Use whatever steps you normally do for tomato to stock.
Then use the OP and firmware listed there.

for my case, i have Custom CFE installed, so i can switch between "dd-wrt" - "tomato" - "xwrt" without any problem, if boot fail i can just easily restart router with reset button pressed and refresh from miniweb.

for failsafe purpose you should consider installing the custom cfe.

Been having a strange problem recently. The internet connection drops (wifi and ethernet) and can't seem to access the router from its home page (192.168.1.1) unless I reboot the router itself.
Pinging the router shows that no connection can be made to it at all.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Wonder what's causing it.

Is there a "self test" feature built in for this firmware? Something that will let me know if the router is going bad or my connection has been compromised or the likes, any errors basically.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have been running 378.55_2 flawless for three years and three months.

On Tuesday 13 Nov I had a power outage and nothing happened.
On Wednesday 14 Nov I ran Undelet Plus (may be unrelated).
On Wednesday 14 Nov I lost connection to sda1 from the USB 3.0 port for the first time.
Before that it was connected for three years w.o. an issue at all!
I have done a factory reset.
    The disk is a Seagate ST350041 0AS 500GB.

This is what the log looks like:

It looks like it's the disk, right? Or could it be the USB 3.0 port on the router? The USB cable? The disk cabinet?

This one is interesting - someone is mentioning the file system with a very similar issue: https://www.snbforums.com/threads/p...with-asuswrt-merlin-380-59.33217/#post-267975

What does "External USB disk status" says? Go to "Health Scanner" and check for errors. Everything ok with the drive? Is it coloured blue or red?

Connect your hard drive directly to a computer. Check your hard drive for any maps and files, that were created by your router's apps (DLNA, Media Services and Servers, Download Master...) and delete them all.

Check your drive again with scandisk.

    Did you try?

Procedure for migrating to NG builds:
    1. Backup the /jffs partition because the flashing will erase all the data.
    2. When coming from 380 to 384/NG You MUST flash the 380.70 build first.
    3. You MUST to do a factory default reset after flashing the 384/NG build.
    4. Clear your browser cache after flashing the 384/NG.

  44. Sl4fko

    5. If coming from 380 do not restore previous configuration, setup the router from scratch.

I don't use any of the apps. Have scanned the disk several times and it comes up as fine and blue every time.

The interesting thing in this whole thing is that (even though I don't use the 2.4 GHz band) when I put "Reducing USB 3.0 interference" to "Enable", the router hasn't dropped connection to the disk for three days and nights! Why do you think that is?

I wonder if I dare "Disable" it again.. :S

    Right, probably not...

Do you have another HDD? Try it, if the problem is still present, it's the routers fault. If not, then it's the disk...

Just trying to understand the use-case for going back to stock, other than wanting to sell your device.
I went from stock to xwrt-vortex after years of (stability) problems with stock.

Must admit that I only use my R7000 in access-point mode.

Don't know if this has been posted before, I was trying various third party firmware for the R7000. Followed 1st page to flash my r7000 with stock cfe to 380.70 and then 384.7, all went well but when I flashed back to stock with the back to stock firmware and flashed ddwrt, ddwrt will not keep settings, ie everytime I reboot it will automatically reset back to default.

Found a solution from ddwrt forum and that is to reflash r7000 stock cfe which I downloaded from that forum and everything is fine now.

Why did you switch to DD-WRT ?
Has it functions Merlin does not have, or better WiFi ?

  59. slidermike

    slidermike Addicted to LI Member

dd-wrt allows you to fine tune the wifi by being able to specifically select the control channel.
That is the first thing that comes to my mind when I compare the 2 OS'.
Not that one is better than the other but I would say the gui of Asus OS is easier to use but in getting that you typically lose that granular control of a less intuitive interface such as dd-wrt.
One example would be wanting to run your router as in AP mode.
There is no simple 1 button to do that in dd-wrt. However in Asus its quick and easy.
Another thing you can do in Asus OS that you cannot do in dd-wrt is tell the router (in AP mode) to get an IP from the local DHCP server.
Kong confirmed to me last week that in dd-wrt you have to static assign the IP for the router in AP mode and that's by design.

I can not get Client bridge function works with Asusmerlin and it works with ddwrt. My plex server is in the basement, powerline could not stream more than 10Mbps and it will be a big job for me to connect it with ethernet cable. R7000 in client bridge mode connected to main router via 5Ghz AC can stream 4K without problem.

Anyway, will use an ea6900 with moded asus AC68 cfe and ddwrt to replace the r7000 and have the r7000 as backup router during this weekend.

Yes it's just scripts for the Asus OS.
Just follow the directions on the snb forums.
I thought I read over there that it's fixes were added into Merlin update.
    Could be wrong.
    https://www.snbforums.com/threads/r...ements-custom-rules-and-inner-workings.36836/

Ok so the VPN fix was included in the update.
You can still run his script on the r7000 just fine.

I asked it some time ago without success, maybe someone went the same way and could help me. I need one VLAN with two LAN ports and WiFi(2.4+5Ghz) for my internal network, second VLAN with one LAN port and WiFi(2.4GHz, 5GHz not necessary) which can't see the first VLAN and one VLAN on one LAN port for iptv. First two VLANs should access internet and have separate internal DHCP. It should not be a rare configuration.. I have it working on Tomato by Shibby, but I'm not familiar with robocfg, creating bridges from terminal and similar stuff. Maybe I could take commands from Tomato NVRAM dump if those work on Asus-Merlin? Or there's no chance to have such configuration on Asus-Merlin at all?

I see that there now is a 384.8_1 version at the same location

This is merely a FYI for the people that already flashed 384.8_0

Yep. There is a hotfix from Merlin (still unpublished btw):
    - FIXED: Cannot save custom settings on OpenVPN server page on non-HND models.

You can always get the chagelog here

    Issue with version 384.8_1
In VPN Client no more button to switch from openVPN to PPTP / L2TP.
Then can not restore to the firmware before the 384.7 if the language chosen is French. I managed to get back to 384.7 by switching the language to English.
    I stay under 384.7 because I use the pptp / L2TP absent on 384.8_1
    thank you for your work

Last time I heard, there is no easy way to vlans on Asus firmware.
There are ways, via the command line but I do not know or recall the exact threads discussing vlans.
Those were of course in the Asus forums over on SNB.
You will probably be better served by a search engine. Good luck!

Adaptive QOS doesn't seem to work with the newest version 384.8-1. Already used the FreshJR script with Adaptive QOS and it still doesn't work.

Traditional QOS works though but setting rules and priorities is a tedious thing.

I'm kinda already missing the Dynamic QOS of Netgear's stock firmware. Dynamic QOS with the latest database works well unlike the ASUS Adaptive QOS. Looks like Netgear has the better auto QOS although overall their firmware is buggy compared to ASUS WRT.

Arg shame. I also saw that FreshJR as some prob with latest firmware too.

Just for a point of reference what was the firmware it worked well for you?

With the Asus firmware, I tried about 3 different builds and none of them had Adaptive QOS working. I have a 100/100 fiber connection with about 15 or so devices sharing it so that QOS is important to me. Since there are many devices and apps being used, it would be very tedious to manually set up rules and priorities with traditional QOS and that's why I need a good functioning auto QOS.

Looks like I'm going back to stock Netgear firmware.

Yup and Vortex doesn't really do the sub releases as he has mentioned before I think we were lucky he did 384.8_1 which Merlin never posted.

How far can I update my R7000 WITHOUT hard resetting it before and after update? For example, now I have 384.7 (which is super stable, by the way...) if I update to 384.8_1 do I have to reset it?

Or maybe just for major releases in the future, like 385...

I am asking, because I have Diversion and Skynet installed and to configure my router from scratch it would take some time...

General rule is reset at big changes (such as you mentioned), XVortex directs you to or when the router acts weird after an update.

For the custom scripts like Diversion I dismount the usb drive before doing the firmware update as I found I would get disc errors on the USB drive. Once the router reboots after the firmware update it remounts itself and everything comes up as normal. For the rest of the scripts I don't do anything as they come up on their own after upgrade reboot.

385 depending what has been changed may require you to reconfigure everything.

Has anyone been able to use Asus DDNS on the latest XVortex? I can't use Asus DDNS since 384.7 onwards. I'm staying at 384.6 currently just to be able to use Asus DDNS with the Asus mobile apps.

    Appreciate feedback. Thanks.
