Have a setup were we are running on ADSL2+ but due to some reliability issues we have a 3G USB stick as backup.

The problem is I work on this remotely as the location is 2 Hours away, and there are no tech savvy people on location.

So my question is, is there a way to setup the 3G as a fallback? Would be a great feature to have. I gather there is nothing built in, but I was wondering would there be a way to do this via a script maybe?

You can look into the dualwan tomato module. Alternatively if you are in a scripting mood you can ping/trace google specifying the exit interface of the DLS circuit and if it fails switch to the other connection.

Found some scripts to test for internet and if none, it changes the WAN to the 3G.

I have also worked out that when doing this I can make changes to the QoS to suit the slower 3G connection.

My issue is now, how to tell when the ADSL modem is functioning again to switch it back?

I would prefer to keep modem in Bridge mode, but the only way I can think of on how to do this is to setup the connection on the ADSL modem and use DHCP from the Router. Then I can check out Static IP and when it responds again, switch from 3G back to DHCP and associated changes to QoS again.

Anyone have better ideas? Even a hardware device to sit between, Router and 3G+ADSL to do the switching for me?
