BEFSR81, Dreadful router, terrible firmware? (SOS!)

Recently my house upgraded from the 4 to 8 port wired BEFSRxx series router. Oh dear god, what a mistake it seems to have been.

I made the upgrade as the 4 port router has worked just fine for a long time, so I figured the 8 port would be a similar experience. This is probably a mistake on my part, something I won't do again!

We've had it for 3 months or so and from the beginning the configuration page has been flakey. This is something I experienced with the previous 4 port routers, pages not rendering properly, breaking, have to refresh them multiple times just to be able to do anything. However since upgrading the firmware to 2.50.2 the config pages have gone from being a bit flakey to unusuable, in both IE and Firefox.

The real problem goes far beyond this though. Recently we've been getting drop outs in our cable internet. It's not the providers, of this we are sure. The only way to fix them is to reset the router to factory settings.

Other than that windows filesharing has just stopped. Of course windows filesharing is a quirky thing, but I am pretty sure that it's something to do with the router too.

So a few questions. Is there anything that can be done to save this piece of crap router from getting chucked? Is it possible to downgrade the firmware and how would I go about doing that? Does this router just plain suck?!?

I'm very frustrated by this thing right now, so would appreciate help. cheers all.

    try here:

I think 2.45 was pretty stable. I can get my hands on a beta if you like, v2.50.6 beta3 though no known changelog.

well downgrading to 2.45 seems to have done the trick, cheers mate, i'm extremely greatful. Firefox still can't render the pages, but i have IEtab so that's ok.

It's still kind of scandalous that 2.50.2 is available from the linksys site, there is obviously something very very wrong with it.

    well panic over for now!

Question though. I know that there are open firmwares for the wireless linksys range, but why not the BEFSRxx range? Is it impossible to do?

the BEFSRXX range is not under GPL licencing. so no 3rd party firmware.
