BEFVP41 & VPN - NetBIOS Problem

I have two retail stores being hooked up via two router/firewalls: One of my locations is using a Sonicwall Pro 230 and the other is the Linksys BEFVP41. I have successfully set up a VPN connection and everything is working fine as far as IP addresses are concerned, meaning, I can access each others machines using IP addresses.

I have enabled NetBIOS broadcasts on both my Sonicwall and the BEFVP41, the machines behind the Sonicwall can PING the machines behind the BEFVP41 using the 'machinename' (in addition to the IP address), however, the machines behind the BEFVP41 cannot ping the machines behind the Sonicwall using the 'machinename' (it only works using IP addresses). Again, I have enabled NetBIOS broadcasts on both devices.

Any suggestions on what to do to fix this, and or if this is a firmware related issue on the BEFVP41? Thanks in advance.

I would have to say its a firmware issue. I have never used the BEF series but i dont know of any of the later series that correctly pass netbios traffic. I have not used them all but quite a few and all that i have used will not pass netbios traffic.

Thanks for the reply; I noticed on Linksys's page for the BEFVP41 that there are 2 versions of the router, Ver 1.0 and Ver 2.0. I apparently have version 1.0 (I just ordered it a week ago from I upgraded the firmware to the latest version (which was dated September 2003), and it still does not work.

    Any suggestions? Thanks.

I dont believe so and thats what i was saying, i am not aware of any linksys router that passes netbios across a vpn tunnel. Though there are others on this board that have tested the RV series that might beable to tell you if any of those routers do.

    Ok, a few comments:

    a) I just bought this router about a week ago- is it an older model? You mentioned 'later series' and I am confused as to if there is a later series of this type of router.

    b) If none of the Linksys VPN routers support NetBIOS across a VPN tunnel, then why do they have an option to 'Enable NetBIOS broadcast' in their routers?

BEF if i remember right is an older series hence the latest firmware is 2003. Now does that mean its any less capable, not really just wont have some of the features of the newer stuff.

As far as netbios broadcast, i have never gotten it to work with the any soho device i have played with though i have not really tried very hard. But there is alot post on this site about netbios and vpn issues, mainly the wrv200 but i know i have read others. I want to say that pptp passes netbios ok but ipsec doesnt seem to like to on linksys routers.

Thanks for the response. Well, I realized that when I went to the Linksys support site, it asked if I have version 1 or version 2 of the device. I have version 1 (even though I bought it a week ago). Is there any way I can get version 2 of the router (get mine swapped) from Linksys? Maybe the new versions have the problem resolved...

Has anyone here gotten NetBIOS successfully working over IPSec and on a Linksys VPN router (hopefully the BEFVP41)?
