What is the best wireless router for a home network, in terms of security, performance, reliability, and cost? And what is the performance (speed) loss when you go from a wired network to wireless mainly used for internet browsing as opposed to local file sharing.

I think we can be biased when it comes to the best wireless router since this is a forum on Linksys devices: WRT54G

If you primarily use it for Internet browsing, you shouldn't notice much of a difference (broadband connections are slower unless you live in Asia/Japan) at short distances unless all your clients are downloading heavily at the same time, but that's due to divided bandwidth over your broadband connection. My network maxes at 22Mbps internally and drops by about 15% max in throughput at over 30ft. In fact, my wireless notebooks outperform my wired computer surfing the Internet ever so slightly when in the same room - go figure!
