ok .. i am in poop.

i have been runnignt two WRT54G routers in a WDS config for a year using Sveasoft's Firmware Version: Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv. I have one V2 and one V3. using WEP and WDS.

    No problem. Until today.

Today was the day that i decided to get up out of bed and mess about with it thinking that i'd like to get a version in there that includes a VPN server. If it were Groundhog Day .. i'd get out of bed and mow the lawn or clean the pool instead. But alas, it's not and i now think i am stuffed unless you can help.

So i installed WiFiBox-code_2.02.pre1-wfb.bin onto the V3 and all was going well except first the http gui was really slow and whenever i attached the DSL modem the V3 router just acted like a passthru device and all i could see was the modem. bizarre.

So I thought .. ok ... let me take the backup of the config and put it onto the V2 device so I am back connected to the internet. No big deal. worked just fine. hence I am connected on a WRT54G V2 with Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv

Now back to the V3 router that still has the WiFiBox-code_2.02.pre1-wfb.bin. I scouted about and could not see anything wrong. So I decided to try the FreemanBasic_V1.0.4_wrt54g.bin - that looks like it will do all i need so i flashed the firmware again. Now it appears the the router is toast.

If i hardwire to this V3 router I do not get an IP address delivered by DHCP. Further when you look for wireless LANs, it is not linksys or my own SSID but ssid [unknown]. Finally, if i hard code a IP address and wire to the router, i cannot ping the router on its address.

Can anyone suggest anything for me to try.

In the interim, I've been down to teh store and bouught another WRT54G hoping to just flash it with Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv and restore my WDS config and get me back to where i was before this day started. BUT ... the WRT54G I have jsut purchased is a V6 and the Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv wont install on to it. It rather unhumourously cmoes back with "Update are failed.". Can anyone help me with whether this V6 router supports WDS out of the box or what firmware i can install to get it to work with WDS with a V2 router runnign Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv or what else i can do.

I shoudl also ask whether I should put the V6 router on as the primary router connected to the DSL modem.

    Many thanks for your help.

Thanks Mr Toxic, well i took a look at Best Buys web site and looks like they dont sell the WRT54GL. I could take a look on the shelves if i take this back otherwise I'll buy it thru a link on your site ... if you help me out a little further.

Can you confirm exactly what you are recomemnding here. I think you are saying ...

    1. Take the V3 raouter and turn it into a nice table ornament or holllow it out and make an asktray for it has lost its useful life as a router.

    2. get a wrt54GL and flash it with firmware that is supported since the WRT54G V6 does not have any firmware out there that will support WDS?

Mr Toxic, I owe you a beer. thanks. I am restored to the point i was when i woke up this morning.

All it needed was to drop the port to 10Mbps/half duplex.

I took off the talisman firmware and am back on the Alchemy now. Interestingly after restoringthe V3, I could not get the configuration to work with the V3 router being the repeater and the V2 router being the primary .. so i restored them to the original witht the repeater being othe V2 router and now all is well.

thanks - i owe you a beer. The V6 box is back in its packaging ready to return to Best Buy. I read up more on the site and elsewhere about the V5 and V6 and the GL router and cant fathom why Linksys would even bring out V5 and V6 and then bring back out a V4 router in the GL guise. that is just somewhat perplexing. What were they thinking?

So I'll go pour me a beer now and raise a glass to your good health for helping. In future, If i need to buy some Linksys gear, I'll do so thru your site so you can get the Amazon commision. Thanks for helping ans saving me some $$$s.
