Hello all, this is my first post here and I'm a bit of a newb when it comes to mucking around with these linksys routers, so be gentile!

Here's the trouble: I have V2.0 of the WRT54G and have the latest Linksys firmware currently installed on it. I'm looking to use the router as a repeater with my 3Com ADSL router/modem: Like this one. Apparently the Linksys firmware doesn't provide support for WDS, but the dd-wrt firmware does.

I've downloaded version 23 B2 and 22, but when I try to upload them onto the router it fails (without giving a reason). I've been using the in-built firmware update to do this and not tftp or anything.

I read when attempting to install another piece of third party firmware (Sveasoft) that the cause for this failure could be that there simply isn't sufficient space on the flash chip to store both versions of the firmware (If I understood correctly, the new version of the firmware is copied onto the chip complete with the current copy, and when it's completed copying successfully, the old version is removed).

I therefore need an older (smaller) version of the linksys firmware before installing this DD-WRT firmware, or guidance if I'm totally wrong here! Can anyone help?

Many thanks for your help in advance!!! :thumb:

You need to install DDWRT generic (or any firmware that is <3MB in size) before flashing to the full one. Linksys default firmware does not allow for big firmwares. Bypass the Sveasoft crap totally though, you will not need it.

Not sure whether DDWRT will satisfy your need though (aka as a repeater).

Where can I get hold of the generic firmware?

If DDWRT is no good for WDS can you recommend some open firmware that does support WDS?

    Many thanks.

I've been trying to replace my Linksys 4.20.7 with DD-WRT for about 2 months now. It has always failed. Last night I finally thought to try IE rather than Firefox (as Firefox is my default browser) and it finally worked!

I flashed to the mini version of 23 B2 then flashed to full version with VPN support. Works like a champ.
