Is there somewhere I can go to to get instructions on how to connect our laptop to use the same printer that our desktop is connected to when using our new WRT54G Wireless Router. THe desktop is hardwired to the router and the laptop is wireless. Thanks !

    Connect to printer ?

Sorry Simon, I should have been more clear and said that the printer (a HP 6200 series printer, scanner, copier & fax model) is hardwired to the desktop unit (an 8200 series Dell). WE sometimes forget that people can't give us advice if we don't give them the necessary information.

if it is USB, then your PC will need to "Share" the printer. you will also need to install printer drivers on the laptop and have them tell the drivers on installation that the printer is a "network" printer.

    Connect to printer ?

Thanks Simon ! Yes the HP 6200 series printer is connected to my desktop computer through a USB connection. I'd appreciate your opinion on something I saw when I went to help on Windows XP and asked about "sharing the printer". I followed the instructions that came up and got a message saying that "for security reasons, Windows had disabled remote access to my desktop computer" but I could enable sharing the printer is I understood the possible security issues that would result, and was willing to accept the possible security issues".

In your opinion, am I opening myself up to any problems by "enabling" "sharing the printer",,, and if so is there anything youy recommend me doindgto reduce the potential for problems if I do "enable" , "share the printer" ?

    Thank You !

in your circumstances you have to enable printer sharing if you want the laptop to use the printer. The PC will need to be turned on at all the times the laptop is wanting access to the printer.

Mike, many people myself included share their printers by this method. File and Printer Sharing service requires certain ports to be opened locally but not to the Internet (see your Windows Firewall File and Printer Sharing settings if applicable), and as long as your router's firewall is on and your wireless network is secured, you should be fine.
