    Here's what I have:
    Cable modem connection
    WRT54G router
Powerbook w/ Mac OS X 10.3.8 with Airport Express

    I just got a network-ready HP photosmart 2600 (all-in-one printer).

I'd like to access the printer over the network rather than connecting directly.

Can I escape having to buy a printerserver or other equipment?

Is it possible to tweak the wrt54g to create a VLAN and connect the printer to one of the ports?

    Any tips will be appreciated.

when you say "network-ready," you mean it has an ethernet port? so run a cat5 to your router.

The HP 2600 is network ready in the sense you can attach a Jetdirect print server. HP has various printservers both ethernet or wireless 802.11b. I would check with HP to see if their print servers support the HP 2600. It does not have a ethernet port. The HP 2600dn has a internal HP 610n print server which has ethernet connection and should have software to set up the printserver.
