Connecting to a Hotspot with Client Mode?

I'm pretty new to all of this, so I'm not even certain if I'm asking the right question. Anyway, here's my situation:

My university has wireless hotspots scattered around campus, and once you connect to them you need to use a VPN client to access the web. My dorm is pretty close to one of them, but my laptop's internal Wifi card isn't powerful enough to get the signal. What I want to do is use my WRT54G, equipped with a cantenna or something, to connect to the hotspot and transfer the signal to my laptop via an ethernet cable. Assuming I can get the WRT54G to find the hotspot signal, what settings would I use to do what I want to do?

I installed the Alchemy firmware on the WRT54G, and set it to client mode. How do I tell the WRT54G which network to connect to? What kind of settings do I need to apply?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
