I've been using a WRT-54Gv5 w/ Linksys 7dBi long antennae for years with few problems. My son uses an XBox360 located about 100 feet and 3 rooms over in our house. Recently he convinced me to get "modern" wireless router. A local retailer placed the E3000 on sale before Xmas for 74.99 so I bought one.

I flashed the E3000 to firmware 1.0.03 and set it up using WPA2 Personal and default settings. Frankly I'm disappointed with the performance of this machine. The signal strength indications on my computer and his XBox are no better and the E3000 drops connection several times per hour. Any suggestions to fix? What setting should I tweak? Should I switch to something like Tomato firmware? Please help.

PS - I just noticed that the power supplies are slightly different the E3000 is 12v 2.5A and the WRT54G is 12v 500mA. Could that be it? It was plugged in behind a heavy bookcase but I went ahead and changed it out just now. The WRT54G power supply was pretty hot when plugged into the E3000. Thoughts?

The power supply of the E3000 should be sufficient it's at 2.5A to compensate the USB ports...

If you're a daredevil, I would suggest flashing the E3000 with Tomato firmware - I'm suing Toastman's specifically the EXT for E3000

The stock firmware keeps disconnecting. Tomato firmware fixed and improved the E3000's functionality.
