Format instructions from Linksys, copy software?

I'm trying to get Linksys to help to solve my Scandisk problem. The last instruction from them was to try to format the drive in another system. This implies that they think there is a problem with the NAS200's formating (perhaps the new firmware). I'm suspicious that I'll even be able to recognize the drive on the NAS200 after this because of previous experiences, but perhaps I'm confused with the formats I tried on external drives.

I have to make sure that my data is mirrored first obviously, and then loaded back before retrying the Scandisk. Actually, checking the newly formatted disk first would be a good idea.

I'd like to do the mirror on my Ubuntu system, but the last time I tried with cp -dpRuv I ran into problems with Ubuntu because of special characters in the filenames (foreign accents). I haven't been able to get this issue resolved in the Ubuntu forums, but wondered if the members of this forum have any recommended programs for mirroring on Ubuntu or other Linuxes? I ended up having to do the mirror with Allway Sync.
