I am looking at an external enclosure for an IDE HDD. The enclosure has a RJ45 port on it to link with network. What I was wondering, and this may be way out there, can the router be set to where this drive be accessed from outside the LAN via an ftp port. I want to be able to download to, and upload from this drive without opening any ports on my computers. I don't know if I have explained myself well enough here but please help me if you can.

Here is a pic of the external case I was looking at.

    External drive / FTP

What you can do will depend totally on what is supported by that box you have. If it is a proper NAS device like those from Buffalo, Linksys and others you will have an FTP server and just need to open port 21 on the router to access FTP from the internet. Of course, you need to be aware of the potential security ramifications.

To open up the FTP port go to the Applications & Gaming router configuration page.
