As the thread title says i am currently running xwrt vortex on my r7000. Whats the best way to get to Fresh Tomato? Which files will I need?

Also, if I want to use my expressvpn credentials do I need to flash just the vpn file for both the vpn and the AIO file???

since you have xwrt vortex, what do you have running now? Both freshtomato build have openvpn on both builds as well as Advancedtomato-arm

thanks for the reply.. I didnt want to use advanced tomato (i have in the past and loved it) because it hasnt been updated since like 2017 I believe.

If both AIO and VPN builds of the fresh tomato have the vpn, whats the difference between the 2 downloads then?

Yes I currently have my r7000 running XWRT Vortex 384.7 the latest build. I have my Fiber ONT plugged into the WAN of the r7000. I have the wifi turned off on the r7000.. my house has ethernet wall ports and I have them all running up to the r7000 upstairs. My xbox, a couple rokus and my other router which is a r7000p are hardwired into the r7000

My r7000p is running stock netgear firmware and is just setup in AP mode downstairs

the difference is the features VPN is smaller as opposed the AIO has additional features.
AndreDVJ has been keeping his repo updated if you care to look at it https://bitbucket.org/AndreDVJ/advancedtomato-arm/ check the change log or ask him, as may still be using the R7000 or R8000 on one of his posts. I'd check to make sure that if you are going to install the r7000 is a go, not sure of the r7000p?

Okay i will... I was going to go with fresh tomato per recommendations on reddit. People were saying that it was better than the advanced tomato build? What are your thoughts?

EDIT: On Andres website it says he isnt going to be working on that project much anymore and updates will slow down.

I normally don't go by what other people say when it comes to open source projects and whose is better. It really is just an updated GUI design elegant, freshtomato does have the web gui to make different selections for GUI's as well if you'd like to change it also, AndreDVJ is a busy man that he does update mainly security I do believe, but I suppose slowing down the projects is time consuming as he is around network, IT industry enough as is. Freshtomato would be your choice then as it is a currently active project.

Not to bombard you with questions but what would be the proper way to go frmo xwrt vortex to fresh tomato??

Factory default my xwrt, flash R7000-back-to-ofw.zip from freshtomato.org, reset factory defaults, flash tomato-r7000-initial.zip from freshtomato.org, flash freshtomato-R7000-ARM-2018.4-AIO-64K.zip from freshtomato.org, reset factory defaults. then setup myself...

Thats what I am thinking to do but just want to make sure

If you already have tomato running all that needs to be done is to backup, reset your R7000, install the kille72 freshtomato build of your choice. If you are installing from Asusxwrt-R7000 then download the inital file, build of your choice. Steps: reset your Asusxwrt-R7000, install the initial build, once up install said build(vpn/aio)once up, reset again, once up configure a fresh setup no backup used from previous builds. If all doesn't seem to your liking go to the build you had before updated freshtomato and use the backup for that backup. Hope this helps Regards

So I can go straight from the latest build of XWRT Vortex to the initial r7000 fresh tomato build without factory resetting and flashing back to the original netgear r7000 firmware?

    Xvortex recognizes trx files
you can go directly from xvortex to the final tomato and vice versa ;-)
cleaning nvram necessary - these are quite different however, firmware and other variables

I tested the Chinese version of R6400 and R8000 XVortex and what I see, better than OFW and Tomato in terms of wifi performance 2.4 Ghhz.
Tomato is not a secret, it has worse achievements than AsusWRT or RMerlin.
However, especially what Rmerlin writes is illegal software.
For me personally, this is also a subjective issue, the most functional is gui tomato.
