I was wondering if anyone knows the effects on health if you crank the output up to higher than like 150Mw? I live in the country, no one within 1 mi of my home except wild life and in order to keep my network bridged wirelessly I need to keep my router and client up around 150-175 range. I'm shooting through a wooded area from my house to my sound studio, so I get a big drop due to trees and what not. But if I keep them both around the 150 mark all seems to be well. I just would hate like heck to wake up dead tomorrow because of it.

you will have no health issues unless you tape it to the side of your head for the next 10 years. The real problem is will you will shorten the life of the RF deck. You can add a fan to the router and that will help the life span of the RF deck. You could also try add a directional antenna pointed to the area you are trying to cover. That may help more than cranking up the power.

not going to matter, I know people that have lived within 15 feet of a 1000 watt ham radio antenna for almost their entire lives, no problem. the damn thing is transmitting so high of a wattage his buddy with a gold tooth can hear the transmissions in his mouth. wish I was kidding, but I'm not. these kinds of radio waves damaging the human body is a new age myth.

:biggrin:Here all along I blamed the eye I grew on forehead on my router...and it was my cell phone the whole time!!

Thanks for the replies...I kinda had an inkling that cranking it up was no good, but as of the immediate moment I have no other options....I am looking into a set of directional antenna's, but I also seen a nifty little gadget that caught my attn: a Engenius ECO-3220+, anyone know about these things? (I know it's a linksys site...just blame it on my third eye).

This is indeed true, but the transmitters are in such a position that you dont live in the RF field. Standing next to a transmitting atenna at 10watts used to give me a headache.

it has been proved that there are some people, an very small minority, that are affected by radio waves and all users should be aware it can effect health. that said the vast majoriy dont have any known issues. if you going to up the signal strength you can always move antennas, or the device away from yourself, or go totally ethernet, though this may give addition costs, it is a safer and much faster way to go.

as to directional antennas they are very good. I used to use one in my last home and it done exactly what I needed it to do. you could also try adding a deflector around the antenna, more info at

I would love to do this, and eventually will when I figure out how. The problem being the distance, in underground conduit, my closest shot (without taking down trees and grinding stumps) is just shy of 350 feet, I'm on that threshold of wires not working....I'm basing this on the 100 Meter rule, I know people claim to have gone 125 Meters and still had no problems....but they don't have my bad luck. I have no place to really put a repeater or router in between and a outdoor vault or box may not be a good idea due to our winters here in PA, I fear it may get too cold for a router-in-a-box trick...and that would be a MAJOR pain the tookis if I had to access it for some reason.
With the large files I would like to transfer to and from my network, wires definitely are my BEST option - but for now I got two 54g's hanging around and they work...I just can't figure out how to file share.....that's in a whole other post That I posted here about.

    Mr Marlboro,

Don't take this personally, I would quit smoking and get a blood test checking my cholesterol level before I start worrying about 100+mw from my AP.

besides I drive way too fast to worry about my health - LOL!

I have friends in WVa getting a mile plus using parabolic reflectors.
