The different types of DD-WRT compared, about halfway down, table labeled File Versions:

Micro is for travel routers with very little memory.

mini is for late model routers with very little memory.

nokaid has minimal features, uses minimal memory. useful if you want to use the memory in the router for other uses, like running a web server. Example: you have surveillance DVRs you want to select and view over the web. make a web page linking to the various DVRs.

Standard has pretty much everything but milkfish and VPN

VoIP has milkfish, lets you use a VoIP phone to make phone calls that connect to the landline phone system. Other things had to go to make room for this.

VPN has a VPN client in it. Connect to other VPN router and communicate over an encrypted link. Users may not need VPN client software on their computer; the documentation is sort of vaque on this point. Other things had to go to make room for this.

Mega is the Supreme Pizza with all the toppings. Too big for WRT54G and 'GL, works on early WRT54GS and WRT54G-TMs

Your router is the big dog, king of the hill of WRT54Gs. Enough memory to run anything.

Downloads: table below the File Versions table above. You want:

    because it's the:

Generic version for flashing via web interface on all supported devices (including Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS)
