How different after installing Unslung?

I've got my NSLU2 working with two drives. No problems as of yet.

I'm very interested in updating the firmware to Unslung to be able to update the functionality. Unfortunately I've VERY much a noob when it comes to Linux.

If I do install Unslung, will the NSLU2 still work as it is? Will the unit still boot normally even if I replace the hard drives, or will it then REQUIRE me to keep one of the drives to boot from?

I don't want to do the firmware change and lose the current functionality. I definately don't want to have to keep a specific drive connected just to boot the NSLU2.
