How Risky?

How risky is it to upgrade RV042 firmware remotely?

Let me clarify what I mean: I will use a Remote Desktop/VNC connection (over a VPN, on the router I plan to upgrade). That machine is directly connected to the router. I will download the firmware to that machine and connect from it to the router, and initiate the f/w upgrade. I know at some point I'll lose my remote connection but the local connection should stay established (?).

I do have a human backup there but I want to perform the upgrade at a time when he will not be there and it would be some hours before he would be able to get in and help out.

Anyone done something like this or is it just a really bad idea?

It should be fine, of course there is a slight risk of something going wrong. However your proposed upgrade procedure is no different than if you were sitting there doing it yourself. I have gone so far as upgrading over the wan link but would never recommend that to anyone.

I have upgraded my routers in that fashion many times, so far without incident. *knock on wood* !!
